Title: Five Times Donna Noble Cried
Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating: PG
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble
Word Count: 437
Timeline: Takes place after the season four finale, Journey's End. SPOILERS.
Summary: Donna cries sometimes, like she lost something. But that’s rubbish.

The first time it happened was hormones. Had to be. The sink had broken, flooding the entire bathroom, and Donna was tapped to help Wilf fix it. On her day off. Because heaven help them if her mum could get off her lazy arse.

Wilf asked her for the screwdriver and she picked it up and then she stopped. It was as if the screwdriver was missing something. Some vital component that would make it work. She stared at the screwdriver a moment, trying to figure out what was missing, then she started crying.

It was good that Wilf didn’t ask why, because she didn’t know. He just held her for a very long time.

The second time was in the library. It seemed small to her, even though it was big for a library. She was just browsing when she saw a stack of Agatha Christie novels being checked out and the librarian was saying “Personally, I just don’t think she’s very good.”

The tears found their way to Donna’s eyes and she hid between two shelves in autobiography until they stopped.

The third time was on vacation in Rome. The Noble family spent an hour walking among the buildings, those carcasses burnt and tarred like a veil covering the life right underneath. Sylvia pointed at a lava-covered corpse (“look at it, Donna, it’s like a snowman!”) and Donna burst into tears.

Because they’d been alive once, they’d listened to songs and traveled the world and fallen in love and just been brilliant. And now it was like none of it had ever happened.

Years passed and her tears came slower. It got easier to wipe them away. So the fourth time she cried was after she started getting a strong pain in her head, when the test came back positive and the doctor said I’m sorry, there’s nothing I can do.

The fifth time Donna Noble cried was near the end, when her hair had fallen out and she was tired all the time and Wilf looked like he blamed himself for outliving both his stepson and granddaughter. There was a man with a brown coat and wild hair and he got into her room by using a screwdriver with something more.

“I know you.” Her voice was so weak now, she wondered if he would recognize it. “What’s your name?”

“I’m the Doctor,” he said, and this time the tears wiped away the nothing and the long years since she’d seen him last and this time the tears didn’t stop either, but it was alright, because she finally had someone to cry with her.

There have been so many great DoctorDonna fis out there that I thought I'd had my heartstrings wrung in every possible direction.
I was wrong.
This was just astonishing. Wonderful sense of loss and completeness all at once, and bringing the whole thing full-circle like that...brilliant.
