So M. Night Shyamalan wants to make a sequel to The Last Airbender (as does his wallet, I'm guessing), focusing on Azula, who he calls the only true villain of the series. Because I guess Ozai, Sozin, and Zhao were all just misunderstood.

Is it too much to ask for that someone realizes that while audiences want to see an Avatar movie, they'd rather see a good Avatar movie? Wait a few years, hire a new director, recast some parts, do a soft reboot. Especially since the next two seasons lend themselves much easier to movies. Book 2 could climax with the Day of Black Sun, while Book 3 could spend more time on Zuko and Suki in the group. Done right, you could even improve on the show (Ember Island Players. Vin Diesel cameos as Toph. The world would explode in a shockwave of awesome).

Is that what he means by that, or does he simply mean that Azula was the only truly competent villain in the series? Because there's an argument to be made there . . .

It might be too much to hope that Shamalan learns from the mistakes of the first avatar film; I'll just keep dreaming of a world where the first film was a collaberation between Peter Jackson, Ang Lee and Yimou Zhang, where Toph was played by Michelle Yeoh (you saw the start of the thrid x-men movie. They could make it happen!) and Azula was played by Noomi Rapace. (Well, if you're going to hand-wave the whole race thing, you might as well cast good actors, right?) I'm a little distressed I can't think of many asian actors for these roles; I guess that was why it was important that they were given to some. Good god.

I bet you $10 that Shamalan casts Miley Cyrus as Toph, and Megan Fox as Azula.

I vote JeeJa Yanin as Ty Lee.

I base this entirely on how awesome Chocolate was.

Holy crap, she'd be freaking amazing. No piffling around with pressure points either; if Jeeja Yanin wants to stop you moving your arms, she tears them the fuck off.

And now I'm picturing her making out with Noomi Rapace . . . thank you for making my head a more awesome place.

Dude, what? Maggie Q was born to play Azula (she was born about ten years too early, but who's counting?).

Don't get me wrong, I love Maggie-Q, and she has badass credentials to spare! But can she do crazy? Can she truly connive? I don't doubt she can cover the Dark Action Girl aspect of Azula, but the Magnificent Bastard Chessmastering?

I am of course willing to watch any film you can cite as evidence. :D

I think the question should be, can Noomi Rapace speak English?

Fair point! Then again, she's swedish- 'yes' might be a fair bet. But if this is crack pipe casting, how about we valmorpharize Ellen Page and give her a martial arts training montage?

Well, assuming we can't just say young Angelina Jolie or young Sherilyn Fenn or young Eliza Dushku, I'd go with Olivia Wilde. Page is too... twee. I'd spend the whole movie wondering why she wasn't playing Suki.

:@ No kidding, she'd make a great Suki! But I think she has Azula potential. Have you seen Hard Candy? Not a great film, but as an audition tape for a character that expresses her inner turmoil by fucking with people . . . Really, just camp up that role a bit, add a little more scenery chewing and you've got a pretty viable Azula right there.

A young Jolie would be perfect, though. If M Night does do an Azula sequel, he could call it "Princess, interrupted", lol. Not sure about Dushku or Wilde, though; I think that both are a little . . . flat? We need a big ham, like Joan Collins or somesuch.

If you liked Chocolate then you should watch Raging Phoenix.

It’s a different kind of role for Jija and the movie is very…

I’ll let this review speak for itself lol

Chocolate 2 begins filming at the end of 2010 in Japan!

If it was me I would call that movie Chocolate 2 : You thought you could quit the Yakuza by giving back your lapel pin…WRONG!!!

For Azula I suggest Veronica Ngo. She speaks english (well enough to dub her own voice in her movies).

Plus she could do this move to every single female cast member in the film! ;)

Look at 1 :28 for « the move ». She makes it twice in this movie and at least once in her new flick (according to trailers and stuff).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U30IUZ0TzZ4

She’s a pretty good actress too. She can act ruthless and sympathetic at the same time. She also never did any martial arts before this movie!!!!!

Ember Island Players. Vin Diesel cameos as Toph. The world would explode in a shockwave of awesome

Yes, it would! The only thing better would be if the Rock did it! XD

Obvs. the Rock has to come in as the Boulder.

From: [identity profile] rocaw.livejournal.com
Well, yeah, but since (spoiler alert?) I hear Suki was left out of the first film, I'm afraid the Boulder would suffer the same fate. =(

It could make everything worth it, though, if they did get Dwayne in there. Especially if they have his little reconciliation moment with Toph in there, and it shows them training whatever. Then, final battle, Toph goes up against one of the best firebending generals they have! Duck, weave, block, feint, PEOPLE'S MOTHERFUCKIN' ELBOW, armor shards everywhere!

Vin Diesel cameos as Toph.

This is Correct. Everyone, I think we can go home now.

So M. Night Shyamalan wants to make a sequel to The Last Airbender [...]

And the Stargate boys would have loved to have made a sequel to their version of Godzilla, too.

Is it too much to ask for that someone realizes that while audiences want to see an Avatar movie, they'd rather see a good Avatar movie?

The problem being that we're rapidly reaching the point where entertainment media providers would rather LOSE money than give their audiences what they want.

Well the Godzilla cartoon was good.

Maybe they can make an animated series out of The Last Airbender!

... oh wait...

Actually, I think season 2 is in a lot of ways harder to adapt to film than the first one. The first has a fairly straightforward chase plot (the Gaang goes from Point A (SWT) to Point B (NWT), two different villains chasing them along the way, then everybody dukes it out at Point B). The second has a the different groups all going to Ba Sing Se by different and not especially connected routes, then you really need to spend a lot of time in the city for the finale to work, Aang has that whole sidetrip in the penultimate episode, Zuko has a bunch of solo character stuff, etc.

Well, I imagine you can chisel pretty heavily out of the Dai Li subplot, since that doesn't have much bearing on the main Fire Nation plotline. If I were doing it, you'd introduce Toph, then do the Spirit Library... and the rest of the movie is just them trying to get to the Earth King, meeting Suki, maybe using The Drill to introduce Azula and her harem posse, then for the climax they invade on the Day of Black Sun but are defeated.

I'd be tempted to cut out Black Sun entirely; it's a great false climax in the series, but if you're only doing three films, I don't think you need it. End the second film with the Fire Nation in control of Ba Sing Se and the Gaang on the run, and in the third parallel Aang's recovery/attempt to find a Firebending Master with Zuko's increasing disenchantment, then they meet up, etc.

From: [identity profile] seriousfic.livejournal.com
I think Black Sun failing would make a better cliffhanger ending/climax than just Azula and Aang having a fight. The real question is how to handle Zuko's arc.
