Am I the only one not getting this?
Mar. 20th, 2008 04:36 pmSo Stargate SG-1 comes out, an ensemble show with an emphasis on the friendship between Jack O'Neil and Daniel Jackson. Slashers being slashers, Jack and Daniel get slashed. But the producers get wise to this and downplay scenes between the two because they're homophobic. At least, that's the accusation I heard.
Then Stargate Atlantis comes out. Still an ensemble cast (moreso than SG-1, even), with a buddy-movie emphasis on Shepherd and McKay. Nothing new there... Star Trek was all about Kirk, Spock, and McCoy; Wild Wild West had Jim and Artemis; Starsky & Hutch had... what were their names again? Never mind. But now fandom hates on Stargate Atlantis for focusing their show on two men, to the neglect of the POC and women on the show. I'm sure you can find all the meta you can stomach on this with a quick intarwebs search.
Is it just me, or can the Stargate guys not win? If they make a show about two men, it's because they're racist or sexist. But if they don't make the show about two men, they're homophobic.
