Leaping lizards!
Mar. 23rd, 2012 06:23 pmYou know, I really should try not to be all "You're not my real father!" about The Amazing Spider-Man, just because the Raimi films were so good (you must admit, even at their worst, they radiated love for the genre and character). But I can't help thinking that if Raimi were doing the Lizard, it wouldn't be CGI from a Playstation 2 game. It'd be a guy in an awesome rubber suit. Maybe with some prosthetics up in this shit. The guy made real Doctor Octopus tentacles and had puppeteers move them around.
Instead, we get Spider-Man Vs. Jar-Jar Binks.

Any scene with Doc Ock using the tentacles as legs or to climb with are CGI, and there's a ton of that in the film. Most scenes of him catching or throwing things with the tentacles, and much of the fighting, also CGI. The puppet tentacles are mostly for quieter character scenes to give them personality with gestures and such.

The Lizard is 9 feet tall with digitigrade feet. As a practical costume that would be pretty rough in Rhys Ifans and whatever stuntmen they use (digitigrade stilts do exist but they're tiring and tricky to use for fast or complicated movement). And being CGI isn't really why Jar Jar sucked, is it? Gollum is generally well regarded as a successful character in the LotR films, and he was CGI.
