I know the smart money's on Davros. And hey, who doesn't love them some Daleks? But there've been two very interesting threads that I think are leading toward something else.

1. Rose is somehow able to return from Zeppelin-World to our darker, zeppelin-less reality. Which means anything in the alternate universe is fair game.

2. The Medusa Cascade and the Shadow Proclamation have been getting a lot of face-time. The Master said that the Doctor had sealed the Medusa Cascade and in Fires of Pompeii, it was mentioned that the Doctor's name was burned in the Medusa Cascade. As per [livejournal.com profile] box_in_the_box's spec, could that mean that the Doctor's pointedly hidden true name was used to seal the Medusa Cascade?

Now, who in an alternate universe (tying in with Rose) could know the Doctor's closely guarded real name.

Why, himself, of course.

That's right. The Valeyard. Perhaps in the alternate universe, the curiously absent Doctor became the Valeyard and now rules most of the universe with an iron fist, while leaving Earth alone for his own reasons. Until he discovers Rose Tyler, nicely saturated in Void energy, and offers her an old-fashioned devil's deal. Get back to "her" Doctor in exchange for, knowingly or unknowingly, advancing his plan.

The main drawback I could see is that doing an "evil twin" of the Doctor just after the Master might be a tad redundant. But the other possibilties are endless. You could have David Tennant playing off David Tennant (cue fangirl squee), you could bring in a previous Doctor to play the alternate Valeyard, or cast an entirely new actor to play the eleventh incarnation... which would add a new twist to the Doctor wanting to avoid regeneration.

Moreover, there was that anvillicious hint in Voyage of the Damned that "choosing who lived and who died" would make the Doctor a monster, not to mention Donna herself serving as a callback to the drowning of the Racnoss in Runaway Bride. So how fitting would it be for the Doctor to meet what he would become without a Companion? That would also explain the presence of Lucy Saxon in S3. As bad as the Master was, at least he used to be friends with the Doctor, at least he had a Companion, at least he had a heart of sorts. So imagine how bad, metafictionally speaking, a Time Lord without any of that would be?

Bad wolf, indeed.

Someone needs to turn this idea into a fic. The scope boggles the mind. Frightening and awesome. *shivers*

My guess? The obvious Evil In A Can. And then you can make that Evil whatever additional Big Bad you like. The Rani, Davros, anyone or anything.

I've just come here from [livejournal.com profile] doctorwho

This is one of those ideas where I wish I'd thought of it. I took a liking to the idea of Ten having an Evil Twin after reading a discussion on the DW comm but that involved the Master but this one's way more awesome. It also touches on something that I really wanted to happen in The Satan Pit.

... Just so long as the Twin doesn't sport a goatee, I was reading the Evil Twin entry at TVTropes just now - tried to imagine Tennant with one and couldn't keep a straight face.

That is so freakin' cool! You get cookies for this ;)

If this happened I would be very surprised, but *very* pleased with RTD. The finale must be amazing to top the last three and this would definitely fit the quota. ^_^

Sorry, I'm trying to follow your thoughts, but I don't know what (or who) is Valeyard.

[...] you could bring in a previous Doctor to play the alternate Valeyard [...]

I call Tom Baker.

He's been saying very nice things about David Tennant's performance as the Doctor lately, and dropping sledgehammer-subtle hints that he'd like to guest-star.

That, and as good as Derek Jacobi was as Yana/old!Master, old!Tom could have done the role just as well, except with the extra creepy of cognitive dissonance for the old-school fans.

I was thinking Christopher Eccleston. Perhaps it's a bit fanboyish, but who wouldn't want to see a good new-fashioned Doctor vs. Doctor fight? It'd be like Kirk vs. Picard! Sheridan vs. Sinclare! Kal-El vs. Kal-L (ummm... except not sucky and Infinite-Crisis-y)!

Considering how much Eccleston seems to hate having done the show in retrospect, I honestly think you'd be more likely to see a Forrest Gump-ed William Hartnell.

And your metaphor is WRONG, bitch, because Eccleston vs. Tennant is not Kirk vs. Picard. Kirk and Picard were two different generations of their show. Baker vs. Tennant is Kirk vs. Picard. Eccleston vs. Tennant is, like ... a way cooler version of Picard vs. Sisko, basically.
