At least Twilight's "Lion and Lamb" shtick was straightforward and uncomplicated. It would even be clever, if Meyer hadn't meant it sincerely.

why do guys with no self-confidence get bashed for having no self-confidence? Does he go on to show that he's a horrible monster throughout the rest of the book.

It isn't that he's lacking self-confidence, it's that he regards a woman's miscarriage, hospitalization, divorce, and depression as ~good things~ because they make it easier for him to get in her pants.
