seriousficSo the latest word from the Superman camp is that they're seeking Viggo Mortensen to play Zod, which would seem to make the General either the Big Bad or that they're building up to him in the sequel. So, good news if you're of the camp that likes Viggo Mortensen being in things, which I imagine most of us are, bad news if you're tired of Zod (for God's sake, they did him twice in Smallville and Big Barda hasn't gotten an episode!).
It's acceptable, though. I mean, Zod was pretty much inevitable. Every superhero movie feels this need to tie the hero and the villain's origin together (Iron Man 2 even retroactively tied the villain's secret origin into Tony Stark), even though by now the genre is so entrenched that I can't imagine any audience would mind two separate people getting superpowers at around the same time. I wouldn't be surprised if the new Spider-Man had the Lizard and Spider-Man getting naffed up at the same time ("Professor! If I was bitten by a radioactive spider, what would being bitten by a radioactive lizard do to you?" "Well... I suddenly have a strange desire to help people save money on car insurance.").
And a Superman movie can really go one of three ways when it comes to villains: Alien invader (Brainiac, Darkseid), supervillain accidentally-on-purpose created by Lex Luthor (Parasite, Metallo, etc.), and something to do with Superman's Kryptonian heritage. So I'm glad they're getting Zod out of the way (this story could especially work with Lex in a more secondary role, being the J. Jonah Jameson against Supes while Zod tries to lure him away from humanity). Hopefully, in future movies they could expand the universe more and get into some of the more gonzo aspects of the comic.
Look, I know Scott and Barda are never going to get their own movie, but c'mon, is the beta couple in a Superman movie too much to ask? Picture this: Barda giving Lois relationship advice. I HAVE JUST WON CINEMA.
