You know, usually I can see both sides of an argument. For instance, "Blade 2 is an awesome movie" vs. "Blade 2 sucks and I hate fun." But this whole "shapeshifting yourself hotter is rape" argument, I just completely fail to see where the other person is coming from there. I don't at all see how hotness takes away someone's ability to consent. Let me spin you out:

Your boyfriend comes home and says "Honey, I cheated on you, but it's not my fault! A really, really, ridiculously good-looking woman hit on me and I couldn't control myself!"

How many of you would say "You were raped"?

Exactly. That is just the most retarded thing. Also, that palestinian guy who was sent to prison for rape because he told a woman he was jewish? Also total bullshit. People need to be taking responsibility with their own damn choices.

I wouldn't in that case. But if he came home and said, "Man, I thought I was having sex from Santana from Glee and it turned out to be Rachel in a cheerleading costume who told me she was Santana," I probably would say, "that's the line."

That's really an edge case, though. Because if you're talking about someone who's using methods to appear more attractive but is in no other way misrepresenting his identity, or a key dealbreaking factor like relationship status, refusing to use a condom after someone says "please put on a condom," that's probably not assault. The problem is, is it, "like a full face of makeup and a good MySpace angle?" cute-up or, "if the guy walked up to me the next day and said we did it, I wouldn't know who he was?"

I mean, if you think about it THAT way, I could see how someone would be creeped out. In general, I think both guys and girls don't want to wake up and feel tricked/manipulated like that.

Well, if you're dating Finn, you're just going to have to get used to that sort of thing.

My personal head!canon is that it's "two hours of exercise a day/vegan diet/awesome cheekbones" you, not a random underwear model. Otoh, if a guy started saying "She wasn't really a C-cup, she just had a really awesome bra, RAPE!", people would be throwing rocks at him.

Also, there's a big difference between "skeevy" and "rape." For instance, it would be skeevy to have sex with someone who was distraught over a death in the family, but it's not something anyone should do jail time for.

BTW, I came up with an idea for fame and fortune. IM me.

Isn't one of the points of makeup and fashion to make you appear to be hotter than you would normally do so?

That said, shapeshifting to appear to be someone else in specific is another matter (as [livejournal.com profile] jennyo points out)

If it was just making yourself look hotter then I'd say it's not.

But, if said shapeshifter took the form of someone the first person loves, cares about or is interested in at the very least, then it becomes a whole other thing.

Well, that's an entirely different scenario. In the first case, someone is sleeping with the shapeshifter based on attractiveness. In the second case, someone is sleeping with the shapeshifter based on affection that the shapeshifter is making a false claim to.

Hmmm

I don't know. Where do you draw the line? There was a famous case of a lesbian who had sex with a hetrosexual women while pretending to be a man (don't ask).

I can understand why someone would consider that rape.

Well, if it's on the level of something make-up would do in a sci-fi movie, then it's cool, but if there's a fundamental aspect of yourself that you're hiding, like race, gender, et al, then it's more skanky. In that case, someone isn't just going out with you based on attractiveness, but on a whole other set of things.

Also, I never watched it, but who knew this had such a dark ending?
