We are not amused.
Dec. 28th, 2007 02:43 pmSorry to spam, f-list. After all, you shouldn't be punished for your good taste in friending me, but if One More Day is resulting in a bachelor Spidey, doesn't inadvertently cement that Mary-Jane is the only one for Peter? However long the marriage (and however much of the courtship was erased) lasted, in all that time Peter couldn't find a girl to start the slightest bit of a steady relationship with. Not Betty, not Felicia, not Gwen-clone, nobody. Apparently, if Peter hadn't met MJ, he would've been (and is) a bachelor til the Rapture.
So OMD has merged the worst bits of shipping (if Person A doesn't love Person B, THEY WILL NEVER BE HAPPY!) with the worst bits of non-shipping (Mary-Jane is totally unimportant to the Marvel universe! Peter would get by just fine without her despite the numerous times the thought of her drove him to succeed against overwhelming odds! In fact, if it weren't for Mary-Jane, Harry Osborn would still be alive!) to create a sandwich of offensive so bad that even the writer hated it. The only ones who hate the Spider-marriage are a bunch of wrinkled, fossilized comics pros who just keep proving their disconnect from the fanbase with their might-as-well-be-misogynistic ship-bashing. Peter's married to Mary-Jane. If you're not writing that, you're not writing 616 Spider-Man. End line.
If you want to write a single Peter, write Marvel Adventures Spider-Man. Or Ultimate Spider-Man. Or bring back Ben Reilly. Just stop with the increasingly convuluted anti-MJ plans. It's just getting ridiculous at this point.
Let's even say, just for the sake of argument, that one of my Spider-Man OTPs got canoned because of OMD. Even if Peter is sitting pretty with Johnny Storm or whoever...
A. I know that as soon as the relationship gets serious, it's going to end. Because Peter can't get married without becoming old and unrelatable, so the relationship is always going to break up and he's going to go back to chasing some hot new tail.
B. The relationship is built on the tragic, painful, literally demonic end of the Peter/MJ ship. New relationship's happiness is built on the foundation of the old one's misery. It's like getting served a meat-pie and then being told it was made out of a puppy that was burnt with acid. Doesn't matter if the meat-pie's delicious, it's still acid puppy!
Hmm... considering that Sins Past was all about what a slut Gwen really was, and One More Day is about how Peter's universe would be better off without Mary-Jane in it, what will the next Spider-event be about? Felicia being brutally raped? No, wait, that was Evil That Men Do. How about Aunt May having a bastard son? There's a troubleing idea. Oh well, maybe there's a story in Betty Brant getting a cliterdectomy. I think that's the only indignity left to heap on the Spider-Man books.
