Granny Goodness

I don't think anyone realize how terrifying this character is.

Usually, she's treated as just one of Darkseid's goons. She's kind of a joke, a drill sergeant... in the cartoon she was even voiced by Ed Asner.

Now think about your grandmother. Probably someone sweet and warm and harmless. Now imagine their chief goal in life is to turn you into a stormtrooper. They'll try to break you, emotionally and physically, until you're willing to kill without hesitation. All the while, they maintain this facade that they love you and will reward you for being a good little boy.

Jesus. This shit is Neil Gaiman before Neil Gaiman even showed up!

In unrelated news, though it'd be awesome if someone like Judi Dench or Helen Mirren played her in a movie (because if JONAH HEX gets a movie, surely we can throw Big Barda a bone), I would love it if Smallville went all-out for the lulz and cast Betty White. YES. I mean, I'm sure they'll screw up Fourth World like they do everything else, probably by casting a 5'2 Real World contestant as Big Barda, here reimagined as Stacy Bard, college sophomore who finds a Mega-Rod which gives her the power to have one bullet-time sequence an episode... but Betty White as Granny Goodness would be a much-needed injection of the good crack.

What about Bea Arthur, if she were alive? She has the right voice, and, hey, she's as awesome as Betty White too, just different.

I think the part of the character that gets me most is that not only is she the trainer of adults, but she rears them from *infancy*.

Really, Betty White as Granny Goodness would be the bestest of the crack in the Smallville bag if they cast her.

I think most people who know the Kirby stuff know Granny Goodness is nasty. I think the Kirby stuff in general comes off a bit campier and lighter to the modern eye because of the style and the time. But when you look at the Emo of living under Darkseid (as seen in a lot of Mr Miracle backstory), most of it is directly because of Granny Goodness.
