It's like there are two constants in the universe. SPN fandom getting kookier and Legend of the Seeker getting more awesome. If I ever hear about an ebola outbreak in fandom, I'm going to assume a Supernatural fan was really pissed off about something to do with Castiel.

SPN is amazing. It's pretty much the only fandom where every reaction to the wank seems calculated to cause more wank. It is basically impossible to reply to without getting pulled in yourself. It's pretty much a Von Neumann wank.

It's the methodical, studied approach that gets me, the way everything has to be a thesis not just on one incident, or one fanfic, but rather how this one incident/fanfic/whatever is instead merely a single thread in a giant tapestry of society/culture/conspiracy to make things Not The Way They Like It, and this entire sociecultspiracy must now be dragged into the light and pummeled continuously until a week after it's dead.

Because why just write a paragraph saying you don't approve of some vaguely fandom-related drunken shenanigans at a hotel two years ago that you weren't even privy to, when you can write a small novel about how everything about this incident proves everything you've ever said/thought/heard/subconsciously absorbed about the Rape Culture. It's the ultimate ego-stroke, because in the time it takes to reduce the life of your keyboard a little more, you go from just somebody who comments on incestuous fanfics about an action-horror TV show into Professor Wincest du Pompousbottom, Rape Culture Specialist Extraordinaire.

It rather trivializes the actual experience. Instead of people talking about the actual event, it seems to be a springboard for fen to start with their Thoughts on Yaoi. Not that it isn't a subject that needs to be discussed, but in a few cases it may come across as self-aggrandizing.

No wonder this was only on UnfunnyBusiness.
