Yes, I know, I know, feminism!fail. Let's just remember I write a shitload of female characters and call it even.
Was it just me or was this pretty incomprehensible in places? I'm not say the bad outweighted the good, because the Lucifer subplot was a great intro for the new Big Bad (and his vessel), but the bad was more... obvious than the good?
For one, on a strictly plotty level, we find out why Dean is the Chosen One, which is that he's the Michael Sword. Okay, good explanation, but... didn't the Angels already know this? Because Zacharias said "oh, we lost the Michael Sword, but now it turns out it's you" and yet in the last season, they knew Dean was special. We can chalk it up to prophecy, but that still doesn't explain why they had to go to the storage locker or wherever it was. Plotting could've been tighter there.
The most glaring thing to me is after one of the big arcs last season being that Sam is addicted to demon blood, here God Himself zaps it out of him. Very, very disappointing, although going by the preview they're hopefully going to play around with it a little. You almost have to admire the balls it takes to dismiss an entire huge plot element with a literal deus ex machina, although it does make me wish for a sixth season. They could get the Greek gods into the mix!
Lucifer: I want to find God to hold him accountable for his creation. And because he fucked a woman as a swan once. What the fuck was up with that?
Secondly, I was worried last season by Ruby's villain turn, that it would take this civil war story of two brothers who are both being unreasonable and flawed and turn it into how Dean is awesome, while Sam is crap. And, well, that's exactly what happened. Dean never has to confront the fact that if he had stopped being self-righteous for five minutes, he could have averted the apocalypse. Yes, Dean, Sam chose a demon over you, after you gave him the ultimatum of choosing you or a demon. I mean, Jesus, remember the part where you were thinking "maybe it would've been better if I had killed my brother"? Not okay. And why the fuck am I so emotionally invested in this? Tl;dr version...
Dean: Blah blah blah kick both heaven and hell's ass blah blah blah...
Me: Oh, shut up and kiss your dead dad's ass some more.
Bobby being possessed and the return of Meg = awesome, although Bobby being able to overcome his demon and stab himself in the gut was cheesetastic. He's the only guy on the entire show that's able to overcome a demon possession? Whatevs.
The super-fan... okay, that started out being kind of amusing, as it always is when SPN fandom is so batshit that even the very show they're fanning has to mention it, but then it got wince-inducing the longer it went on. Yes, show, people write smut about your actors fucking. They do it for everything. It's not as funny as you think. And seriously, Kripke, even the Wincesters don't rip off jokes line for line from Galaxy Quest.
Damn you for making me defend the honor of Wincest with your plagiarism, Kripke!

Date: 2009-09-11 06:37 pm (UTC)Perhaps you weren't paying attention: he's Bobby. End of discussion.
>And seriously, Kripke, even the Wincesters don't rip off jokes line for line from Galaxy Quest.
I'm fairly certain Stephen King did it first; apparently, at some point in the Dark Tower, he meets the characters.
>Dean never has to confront the fact that if he had stopped being self-righteous for five minutes, he could have averted the apocalypse.
And Sam's been remarkably self-condemning. Even if he was tricked into releasing Lucy, he still thinks it's His Fault.
>I mean, Jesus, remember the part where you were thinking "maybe it would've been better if I had killed my brother"? Not okay.
Considering that his brother was about to go release Satan...

Date: 2009-09-11 11:36 pm (UTC)I'm not saying "ha ha, metafiction." I mean ripping off the exact same joke, line for line, from Galaxy Quest.
Brandon Wheeger: I just wanted to tell you that I thought a lot about what you said.
Jason Nesmith: It's okay, now listen...
Brandon Wheeger: But I want you to know that I'm not a complete brain case, okay? I understand completely that it's just a TV show. I know there's no beryllium sphere...
Jason Nesmith: Hold it.
Brandon Wheeger: no digital conveyor, no ship...
Jason Nesmith: Stop for a second, stop. It's all real.
Brandon Wheeger: Oh my God, I knew it. I knew it! I knew it!

Date: 2009-09-12 12:57 am (UTC)Also, why am I even bothering to defend it? This isn't Dickens, this is a kinda-cheesy show about two Southeners with a cool car that kill monsters. Let's talk about how awesome Mr. Mircale and Big Barda are or something. Or kittens. Or Scott and Barda with kittens. Hey, that'd make a good crackfic!

Date: 2010-05-01 11:40 pm (UTC)Hi, I was just talking to a friend about this (having only just seen the SPN ep in question) and was trying to find a youtube clip to prove my point.
My (fruitless) search led me to you.
Yeah, it was super cheap, it wasn't a shout out. It was blatant plagerism. I guess they get away with it because most people may not be overly familiar with GQ? But wow, I watched it and went - wtf?
My only hope is that it wasn't deliberate, but wow, either way - yeah cheap.
I'm kinda glad someone else noticed it.

Date: 2009-09-17 07:21 pm (UTC)that's why angels said they lost the micheal's sword and couldn't find it, because hex bag prevented them from finding it. obviously they already knew dean was micheal's sword and that's why they tried to protect him.
i'm not sure about castiel's return at this point. what he said about brothers ending up in plane obviously meant that the god interfered, which also means castiel was brought back by god himself. Then it's very likely that castiel is given immense amount of power, since even zachariah is fearing him now.
