Some would say that Wolverine And The X-Men is what you’d get if you took Spectacular Spider-Man and subtracted the animation quality, good voicework, plotting, fidelity to the source, non-Gary-Sueness, and awesomeness. I said instead that WatXM is what would happen if you did all those things, then added DARING POLITICAL SUBTEXT.

It seems obvious that WatXM, with its selection of Wolverine as the leader of the team for reasons that were either arbitrary (textual) or because he was popular (metatexual), then showcasing him as an ineffectual leader who continuously leads the team into disaster and misfortune, is an adroit satire of the American political landscape. But who is it parodying? A doddering McCain? An inexperienced Obama? An in-over-her-head Palin? Regardless, I think this multilayered assault on philosophical sensibilities makes WatXM one of the most compelling shows on television.

Hey, guys, you know that time in Morrison's New X-Men run when Emma hit on Scott and they started a psychic affair?

You may have thought that was consensual, what with there being no evidence to support it being anything but, but Emma really mind-raped Scott. SRSLY. A fangirl said so and she wouldn't lie, would she?

Look, I'm a big fan of the fan-wank. There's so much canon, and so much of it will be inevitably bad, that No-Prizes have gotten be won. But so long as you're fan-wanking THAT HARD, why not go all out? Emma and Scott never had an affair, it was all a ruse to fool... umm... Domino, who was secretly a Skrull that had infiltrated the X-Men. And Jean never died, she just left to infiltrate Voldemort's inner circle. Yeah. And Jean is going to come back and Emma is going to say "Thank God, I can stop pretending I'm having nonstop sex with Scott... he snores!" And Jean will say "Don't I know it!" And we'll freeze-frame on everyone laughing. Roll credits.

It literally astounds me how often these Emma/Scott bashings boomerang and hit Saint Jean. Take the wish to have Jean come back and get together with Scott. Reasonable? Yes. But apparently they won't be satisfied with that. They want Scott to drop Emma like a hot potato so he can get with Jean, WHO WAS THE ONLY WOMAN HE EVER LOVED. Really, now, how would that make them look?

Scott: JEAN! I was sharing a room with Emma, who I told repeatedly that I loved and actually built a life with, but that was all bullshit. I really love you, and she was just a convenient sperm receptacle when I got bored of solo masturbation.

Jean: That's so romantic! (smoochies)

Emma: So... I'm the most sympathetic one? So that's what it feels like. Don't quite like it.

And then there's this mind-rape thing. Given that a few issues later, Jean caught them together and was equally furious with both of them, how does that make Jean look?

Scott: Oh God! Emma raped me! It was horrible! (Horribly sexy)

Jean: Shut up! How dare you get raped! I hate you!
