You remember those old Pepé Le Pew cartoons where he chases the black cat with the accidental white stripe around? Well, I just saw a commercial for some... text message phone thing where the cat DELIBERATELY PAINTS A WHITE STRIPE ON HERSELF, then calls up Pepé Le Pew to exchange cutesy messages. What the fuck? Look, I realize a children's cartoon about a French skunk trying to rape a cat doesn't play the same nowadays, but if you're going to bring it back, must you make it diametrically opposed to the entire canon? Why not Babs and Buster Bunny? They're about as relevant and at least they actually have a mutual attraction to each other.

What's next? Popeye and Bluto holding hands?

And the whole thing with the deliberate painting just raises a bunch of disquieting questions. Does Pepé Le Pew know she's not a skunk or is she deceiving him? Is it some... kink thing? Look, commercial, you brought these questions up, not me!

I remember a cartoon that ended with the cat chasing Pepe back. Pepe had lost the smell for some reason, but now the cat had fallen into a bucket of paint so she looked awful.

The cat likes it, she just plays hard to get.

Oh, I remember that one.

"Vive l'amour! We die together!"

Pepe fell into a bucket of blue paint, and came out de-fragranced & looking awesome, but the cat had fallen into a bucket of gutter water and looked like a sewer rat.

I haven't seen the commercial yet.

Pepe had fallen into a bucket of paint, he was now blue. The cat had fallen into a barrel of water and was completely soaked.

I haven't seen this commercial, and now am very angry at the polluting of my favorite Looney Tunes sketch. Damn you Corporate America, damn you!

I don't know--wasn't there one where the cat actually does return Pepe's amorous intentions, but when she gets all up in his business with her mrowing and purring, he loses it? He can't handle actually having to go through with it, which is some kind of hilarious commentary on hypermasculinity and the ways in which men are forced to behave as leches as a result of social conditioning, or some such. That or Pepe was gay and in the closet.

Wasn't there that episode of Sex and the City where Miranda angrily took up the construction worker who kept hitting on her. He balked and said he was married.

Yes, I have watched Sex in the past. Sue me.

Okay, so it's not just me! I saw that commercial yesterday and was seriously wondering if I was misremembering that entire damn part of the Looney Tunes canon. Sheesh.

I will add my voice to the chorus - one of the last Pepe cartoons (which I love!) features "Babette" deciding she will never find love, and painting a stripe to go after Pepe. There is even a smarmy French-accented female voiceover throughout. Too early in the morning to get my reference book out to give you the title and date (yes, I am a Looney Tunes geek), but it's real.

Because it looks like a Kentucky relationship, if you get my drift. At least people have a clue who PePe is.
