Title: Obi
Fandom: Iron Man movieverse
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 476
Characters/Pairings: Tony Stark, Obadiah Stane, references to Tony/Pepper
Summary: Tony doesn't have a dad, but Obadiah does his best.
Obadiah woke up in the middle of the night with the gasping nightmare certainty that he'd been found out. This time, it wouldn't go away with a fleet of lawyers and fat envelopes of hundred-dollar bills. This wasn't cooking the books, this was treason. He'd be hunted down and hung. But no, it was just Tony. He probably thought that Obadiah had that infantile theme song as his ringtone.
Obadiah picked up the phone, taking a moment to center himself. Tony must be some sort of mutant. He just could not keep to a sleep cycle. he was always out late carousing, calling Obadiah in the early hours of the morning. Obadiah wondered when was the last time he'd gotten a decent night's sleep. Oh yes, Afghanistan.
He answered.
"Hi Obi, it's me. Do you know if I'm in love with Pepper?"
"Huh?" Obadiah scratched his scalp.
"You know I'm always the last one to know about these things..."
"Well, how often do you think of her?"
"Back there," which was what he always called Afghanistan; insanely Obadiah felt guilt tightening his throat, "she was all I could think about."
"I'm so sorry you had to go through that."
"It's alright. It put a lot of things in perspective."
"And it netted us the arc reactor. Do you know how much greatness comes from tragedy? Amazing Grace was written by a man who lost everything."
Tony didn't say anything. Overcome? Suspicious? It was so hard to tell these days. Tony had the amazing talent to get taller and grow facial hair while staying the entitled brat crying for his parents. Him actually changing after Obadiah had written him off... was just like him.
"Have you talked to Pepper about how you feel?"
"I don't know how I feel. That's why I'm asking you."
He was a sweet kid. It really was a shame he'd been such a liability, with his boozing and fucking and glory-hogging. But maybe Obadiah had been hasty. Maybe this was the hand of Providence at work. If he could just keep Tony in a lab where he belong, they'd both be much happier.
Tomorrow, he'd file an injunction, bury the camel jockeys next. Tony would buck and whine, but then he'd be distracted by some cover girl and things would settle into business as usual.
Maybe instead of some model, their own Pepper Potts. An affair like that could pave right over the painful transition.
"Tony, when your father met your mom, I told him to follow his heart. We got you out of the deal. Tell Pepper how you feel. Show her a good time. You're no spring chicken, Tony, you need to find a good woman before you start going bald. Trust me."
'Thanks, Obi. I don't know what I'd do without you."
"Hopefully we'll never have to find out."
