Joe Johnston directing Captain America (which is already a period flick, so Marvel's two for two as far as I'm concerned).
I think it's actually a good choice for a big, pulpy, Nazi-smashing thrill ride. Obviously, Jumanji and The Rocketeer didn't change the way anyone looked at the world, but they were great fun. The Rocketeer especially. How many movies can you watch and say "okay, that gratuitous close-up of Jennifer Connolly's cleavage was nice, but it wasn't the best part of the movie"? I'd be far more worried if they went the Superman Returns route and tried to make a thinky meditation on American politics and whatnot instead of Cap smashing Red Skull in the face with a flag-themed shield. You should leave the theatre pumping your fist and chanting "USA! USA!", not pondering America's role in the world. I mean, for Christ's sake, it says "Captain America" right there on the tin. You know what you're getting into.
Now if they can just get a good script and a good actor for Cap (Leonardo Dicaprio? Worrying), we'll be all set.

Date: 2008-11-10 06:10 pm (UTC)To be honest the thought of him playing Cap is hilarious. I might go to the theatre just for the lols. But, then again, I also felt that way about Heath Ledger as Joker until I saw the movie.
