Title: The Two of You
Fandom: Supernatural
Rating: PG-13
Characters/Pairings: Ruby, OFC, implied Sam/Ruby
Word Count: 374
Notes: Truly minor spoilers for season four.
Summary: How Ruby gets her bodies.
You’ll have a name.
It could be Betty, or Joan, or Abigail, or Maria. Her name is Ruby, that doesn’t change. And she’s a woman, or at least she likes to think of herself as such, so your name will always be a feminine one.
There are some particulars you’ll always fit. She likes being attractive and young, so that’s where you’ll be. But she also doesn’t like to repeat herself, so if she used to be a redhead, you’ll be a blonde, and if she used to be a blonde, you’ll be brunette.
Oh, and you’ll be sick. Really sick. Cancer. AIDS. Something incurable, something that will eat you alive. Then she’ll come to you: as your beauty starts to fade, while you’re speeding from depression to acceptance. She’ll tell you about the war, the demons. She’ll make you a deal.
You’ll say yes, because if you don’t, this story isn’t about you.
You’ll find out what she really looks like, as the old her rots away and the new her is… you. She’s black smoke, but that’s just the skin. If you want to see the inside, you can look into a mirror. The two of you can look into a mirror.
It won’t be so bad. She doesn’t break the deal. It takes some getting used to, your own body being a time-share, but it beats the alternative. Being Ruby makes the disease stop, makes you eternally young and beautiful. That boy (or girl) you always liked, but never had the guts to ask out? Ruby can help. That drug you were too much of a goody two shoes to take? Ruby will hold your hand while you take it. No consequences anymore. You’re dead girl walking, and it ain’t God that’s your co-pilot.
Someday, of course, the ride ends. You can guess at why. So many times that weren’t meant to be seen, so much pain that you take instead of her. And, of course, there was the body she used to wear. The blonde to your brunette. Someday, you’ll figure out why she smiled as the black smoke bled out of her.
But today, you and Ruby can agree. You’re in the mood for ice cream and Sam Winchester.
