In earlier generations, dating more than one person at a time had no great stigma to it. However, "dating" has itself shifted since then. "Dating" now is much more akin to what "going steady" was back in our parents (or our parents parents) time.
Then, dating multiple people at the same time was expected. How else were you to get to know people, and make a decision about who you were going to spend your life with. Then, as things got more serious, you'd start going steady, and kind of precursor to getting engaged. Engaged to be engaged, so to speak.
But these days, many people assume that if you're going on a date with someone, you're not seeing anyone else. Serial monogamy at it's worst! ;)
