Summary: That was totally wicked, right?

Sally Avril knows that everyone thinks of her as the toughest broad in Midtown. Not girl, not chick, broad. Which is the way she likes it. She can’t be the prettiest, she can’t be the smartest, but she can be the one gal any guy would kill to have in his corner. It’s her gig. Her niche. Her… what she’s good at.

Everyone has a niche. Peter Parker’s a grade-A nerd, so how come he’s landing a hot girl like Mary-Jane? And Osborn’s a rich kid, so what’s he doing on the football team? And her dad’s her dad, so what’s he doing running off with some skank? Doesn’t he know he and mom are supposed to be forever?

High school sweethearts go to college together. Then they get married. Then they have kids, then they live happily ever after. That’s the way the world is supposed to work. You can see it on the billboards, on the magazines and on the TV. Who sent out the memo saying different?

So when Flash Thompson, Liz Allan’s frickin’ soulmate, starts hanging out with Mary-Jane Slutson and the captain of the football team breaks up with the head of the cheerleading squad.

What. The. Heck.

It’s all Peter Parker’s fault. He and his freak friends are upsetting the natural balance of things. Flash, Osborn, her dad… it all started when Peter brought that skank to the fall formal.

She’ll never forgive him for that.

Mary-Jane gets that Peter is nice. She doesn’t need Gwen doing that weird little dance. And it is a weird little dance. Depending on the cycle of the moon or whatever, Blondie seems to want Mary-Jane to stop jerking Peter’s chain – hey, Gwen would know if MJ were jerking Peter’s chain. There’d be hickeys – and to want Mary-Jane to totally clear the field so that Gwen can play.

What they don’t get is that Mary-Jane isn’t playing the field or being a skank or anything. She’s just being cautious. She’s not going to end up like her mom, trapped in a dead-end marriage to a dead-end deadbeat. She’s going to try before she buys. Find someone that’s cute and ambitious and headed for bright lights. And then, maybe then, she’ll settle down.

And Flash is hot and all, but he’s kind of a jerk. She sees him mock Peter and she wonders how he’d act when his daughter went out at seven o’clock in a belly-baring top. She wonders if he’d scream. If he’d slap.

And Peter’s nice and all, but a little less dweeb, a little more tiger? She’s not going to try to change her man. That’s the trap her mom fell into, so to hell with that. But maybe she could… kinda… excavate the tiger from the dweeb? Peter’s smart, and smart guys can do well. He just needs a little backbone. A little support.

Mary-Jane could be supportive.

She could.

It’s not that he doesn’t appreciate Liz. Flash Thompson is a ladies’ man. It’s her who doesn’t appreciate him. So what if he can’t be there, like, 100% of the time? He’s captain of the football team. He has responsibilities. The school is a ship and he’s the captain. Yeah, that means perks like having the hottest chick in school, but it also means he’s gotta keep the whole thing running. Gotta rally the troops, gotta move the herd.

But she wants to start some kinda Community Outreach Program to Nerdsville? Flash is a feminist. He knows that every good man has a good woman behind him, or whatever. So if she’s not there, he’s gonna be only 95%. And he needs that extra five percent. Plus, Liz is hot and he really does not have time for breaking in a new girlfriend. There is stuff to do.

And as hot as Liz is, Mary-Jane is at least 40% hotter. It’s simple math. So if Liz gets to pal around with Puny Parker, he gets to mess around a little with MJ. It’s only fair.

Didn’t she see him help Spidey out with that Doc Ock guy? Like, hello? He’s a hero. Breaking up with him is totally uncool.

Priorities. Setting goals. It’s what makes Gwen a good student. She can set some things aside for later and focus on the here and now. So she doesn’t think about the Peter thing when Harry needs help (although, ah-ha!, Mary-Jane’s totally with Flash and not interested in her geek) (but then Liz Allan wants him? What the frick! When did Peter Parker become a hot commodity?). And she doesn’t think about if Peter’s okay while Doctor Octopus is tearing through the amusement park (but where the frick is he?).

And when Peter comes back (he’sokayhe’sokayhe’sokay) and squeezes her hand and gives her The Smile (which puts The Look to shame, as far as she knows), she boxes those feelings up for way, way later.

Harry Osborn has a feeling he could take this Doctor Octopus – oh god that’s one of his dad’s scientists, oh god, oh god – down. Like, way down. Total closure. Just a little more green globulin and he’d be invincible. Always just a little more, making him a little better. Faster. Stronger. A little closer to good enough, because of course that exists.

But he hides and cowers with the rest of them because now’s not the right time. Even though he could. But he isn’t complete yet. He needs something. Maybe a costume, like Spider-Man has. A mask and gloves and other stuff. To hide his shame and…

Harry Osborn has a feeling. Like there’s an itch at the back of his brain. Sometimes he can almost grasp it. Other times he’s scared shitless to even touch it.

Maybe a little more green globulin would help.

It isn’t that Liz Allan like-likes Peter. It’s just that he’s nice. Friendly. He treats her like more than a pair of tits in a tight T-shirt. And people wonder why he’s so popular with the ladies all of a sudden? He’s nice, clean, smart… plus, it doesn’t show under his baggy clothes, but he’s got some muscle.

She’s not ready to make it official or anything, but he’s fun to spend time with. And if Flash doesn’t shape up…

Well, who knows.

But one thing’s for sure. Puny Parker definitely ain’t so puny anymore.

Spidey hangs from a web, nursing bruises and bones pressed to just below their breaking point. He was lucky. Ock was a tough customer. Days like this, Peter really wishes he could be like all the other kids. Normal. No secret lives.

But since that doesn’t seem likely, he swings his way back home for some well-deserved R&R. With a little luck, everything will be back to normal by morning.
