The nature of evil
Jan. 9th, 2012 04:17 pmSo Benedict Cumberbatch is playing both Smaug the Dragon in The Hobbit (who, if you haven't read it, is not one of those nice dragons like Draco in Dragonheart) and the antagonist in Star Trek 2. And going by Super 8, J.J. Abrams doesn't consider eating a bunch of innocent people to be at all villainous or deserving of punishment, so you know this motherfucker is going to get into it.
Basically, it's kind of weird seeing an actor become Gary Oldman right in front of us. In five years, he's probably going to be menacing Scarlett Johannson's Clarice Sterling in a Silence of the Lambs reboot.
Also, the guy who played the hero in the original Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is showing up in Hollywood, in Abduction and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, both times playing the heavy. In M:I4, he's basically just making a cameo to be evil. I have to imagine he has an agent saying "Alright, you're a talented actor, but you look kind of schlubby. In Hollywood, we cast hot people to play schlubby people and make them wear glasses, so you'll only be playing roles that are out and out evil."
