So they're making a Lone Ranger reboot with Johnny Depp as Tonto (I know, I know, wait) and the twins-who-were-really-one-guy from The Social Network as the Lone Ranger. As you might expect from a film with an A-list star as the sidekick and the guy(s)who didn't invent Facebook in a Facebook movie as the hero, the story's being rejiggered so it's about Tonto.
Johnny Depp: "I remember watching [the show] as a kid, with Jay Silverheels and Clayton Moore, and going: ‘Why is the f—ing Lone Ranger telling Tonto what to do? I liked Tonto, even at that tender age, and knew Tonto was getting the unpleasant end of the stick here. That’s stuck with me. And when the idea came up [for the movie], I started thinking about Tonto and what could be done in my own small way try to — ‘eliminate’ isn’t possible — but reinvent the relationship, to attempt to take some of the ugliness thrown on the Native Americans, not only in The Lone Ranger, but the way Indians were treated throughout history of cinema, and turn it on its head."
Yeah, that TV show was so racist, casting a Native American to play a Native American. This is post-racial America! A black man is President! If you want to have a Native American in your movie, you cast the best person for the job, like a white guy. White guys are great at playing Native Americans. It's called being colorblind, racists, look into it!
What's next, do you want a black guy to play Nelson Mandela? Ha!
I mean, c'mon, I haven't seen an opening left that wide open since Shyamalan talked about how diverse he'd made The Last Airbender.
ETA: Also, wouldn't the Lone Ranger tell him what to do because he's a Texas Ranger and Tonto is just some guy, ethnic minority or no? What else is going to happen? "Well, looks like those six cattle rustlers have a hostage. What's the plan, Native American individual? Tell it to me, the trained law enforcement official. I see no way my entire career could come in handy right now."

Tonto is the mentor of the young and inept Lone Ranger.
There may be kung-fu fighting in this tv movie. Bad kung-fu fighting.
And since they are retooling the story in the Johnny Depp one, why not make Tonto mixed? Just saying. Mixed races are underrepresented too. They could even put a light on the Native's forced conversion. When the Church kidnapped young Native kids from their villages and stuff.
