So, having seen around the blogosphere the usual number of posts on A Game of Thrones regarding its sexism, rape scenes, and racism, one thought occurs to me. Not on the show, which I haven't watched and thus can't rightly have much of an opinion on, or on the books, which I haven't read in a while. In fact, the thought goes something like this:

"So, internet, you want an epic fantasy series, but with strong female characters, no rape scenes, and on top of all that, maybe instead of animalistic black characters who rape blonde women, we could have a badass black warrior who is also a loving husband and father, and he helps the heroes fight evil? That sound good? Well, we had that show and it was called Legend of the Seeker and you didn't watch it, so now this is happening!"

Well, the Mord-Sith society exists through the regular abductions of young girls and torturing and brainwashing them into being kinky bisexuals (I guess Goodkind doesn't think women can be evil, kinky or bisexual on their own?) and the continuation of the Confessors relies on institutionalized rape, as they can't have any sort of procreative sex (I assume they can have f/f sex with each other if they want, as I doubt they can Confess each other) without making the sexual partner a slave for life. And apparently are only allowed to turn their enemies into loving and obedient sex slaves, and not, uhm...willing followers? Which would still be extremely iffy in terms of consent, but at least it wouldn't be straightup "Rape for the good of our culture!" then.

So there may not be on-screen "throw her down and have your way with her" rape, but rape is still very present in LOTS.

But not rape scenes. TECHNICALITY![/Mortal Kombat]

Keep in mind, the TV show and books are very different beasts. I'm pretty sure rape isn't part of the Mord'Sith's "training" in the show, although there's obvious consent issues in their devotion to Lord Rahl. But you could fan-wank that the bisexuality is something of a situational reaction to the whole cult/sisterhood atmosphere, if that makes any sense?

Also, TV show, mostly sure that Confessors only mate with people who have already been confessed, unlike in the books, where they just straight-up Confess men because they think someone would make a good father. (Oh, Goodkind...)

Either way, Legend of the Seeker removed a ton of rape from the source material, while A Game Of Thrones seems to have added some.

Yeah, I'm going to start up a Legend of the Seeker party for all my girlfriends to watch.

The pain of losing it....it's still there...
