I am not having a discussion about whether fangirls will ship ChrisEvans!Cap and HugoWeaving!Red Skull when fandom has repeatedly proved willing to go there. Even on S_D, no one will argue with that, just that it's mean to put it out there. Well, fuck it, if Raiders of the Lost Ark came out today, there would be a hundred fandom secrets about how "adorkable" Toht was and how hot it was when he was about to torture Marion. I'm not casting stones, I get off on some weird shit too, but you've gotta be able to step back and say "oh, fandom" before you get to liking the smell of your own farts.

I'm just saying that a good shipping portmanteau for them would be Red State. Not because of some Nazis = Republican thing -- I live in Texas, we have the Alamo Drafthouse, fuck off -- but because red as in skull, state as in America. It's genius in its simplicity!

Here's my deal with this:

I can support the slashing of a lot of types of characters.

Couples with generationally wide age differences, heroes with villains, siblings ... hell, all sorts of stuff, as long as you can a) offer even a token fig-leaf's worth of in-character justification for it, and b) it's based on a foundation of mutual informed consent.

Do me that small favor, and I'll defend your head-canon of Sam/Dean, Charles/Erik and even Bruce/adult!Dick, even though I'm not even GAY.

The difference is, the Red Skull is not just a villain, but a NAZI, in an entirely non-Godwin-invoking sense of the term.

Should that matter so much? Maybe not, but it DOES, because regardless of the fictional evils committed by HYDRA or AIM or the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants or whoever else, none of those groups were responsible for the extermination of more than six million people IRL.

It's like my line on RPF; unless it's in the form of intentionally overblown, impossible-to-take-serious parody, it makes me a bit uncomfortable on general principle, but I can get along with it if it's written well ... but on the other hand, if you're one of the people who's written Schindler's List slash (and yes, this is an actual thing that actually exists, as I discovered much to my horror a while back), then fuck you. And I mean seriously, just fuck you, because THE HOLOCAUST IS NOT A FUCKING FANDOM, YOU SICK FUCKS.

I wonder if this might not be one reason why Johann Schmidt is being shown as an agent of HYDRA rather than as a Nazi, because while I doubt the moviemakers know or care about slash fans online, I'm sure they're very conscious of the fact that it'd be pretty goddamned hard to sell an action figure with SWASTIKAS on it to kids without pissing off an entire cross-section of people, not only in America but around the world.

The kind of person who would ship Red State isn't going to care how out-of-character it is (okay, maybe Red Skull would want to enslave/rape Steve in an "he's Aryan perfection!" sort of way, but Cap would cut his dick off before he put it in Skull. And then get Tony to invent some sort of ten-inch cyber-dick. USA! USA!). I just want to be able to sit back and have my lulz.

See, I would actually support a UST interpretation of their relationship that has Johann jealously coveting Steve precisely because Steve embodies the Aryan physical ideal much more than Johann himself ever has, but yes, that's an entirely different thing, because you're right, Steve would literally fuck HIMSELF before he fucked Johann.
