They're *ironic* boobs
Sep. 16th, 2010 02:22 pmOn rewatch, Bitch Slap is an odd film. It's trying to be a parody of exploitation films at the same time it in itself is an exploitation film... which isn't impossible... but the end result skirts the line between feminist exploitation movie and exploitation movie that just doesn't have any nipples. It would be ungracious to harp on the nudity... there's a lesbian sex scene that's so explicit you want to check for Sasha Grey... but the script is damn mediocre. It's like a stretched-out SNL sketch, with the premise people are unable to go for two sentences without using a term from Urban Dictionary. After a while, you start really wishing someone would come up with a joke that isn't just "yes, that's an euphemism for a blowjob. Yes, that's derogatory slang for a female." You get the feeling someone took an unused Tarantino rip-off script from the 90s, turned all the characters into women, put euphemisms into every single sentence, and said it was a satire.
Maybe that's a bit unforgiving. On its own terms, there are pretty women, they are strong female characters (ish), and they do get into fights. The relationships can be surprisingly sweet, and there's some good fanfic to go with the canon. I just wish they'd done more with the story.
