Is this named after the Broadway musical by Stephen Schwartz? Because that would explain all the gay...

So the episode starts off with Liz getting a cold. Weirdly, she keeps some medicine in a Zip-Loc bag, so her dad can see it and think she's into drugs. Gosh, if only she knew someone who could cure physical ailments with one touch. Anyway, Marie approaches her and talks about how tired she is of being a 'slave to men.' "It's time to branch out, explore other possibilities, you and me, together," she says, as she pulls her blouse open.

Well, this show got awesome in a hurry.

But she's just showing off her fake belly button piercing. Boo! Then word comes in that there's been a sighting of strange lights in the woods. At school, Michael and Max disappear into the high school make-out spot. I knew Michael spent too much time on his hair to be straight. Then Isabelle follows them in. People, Supernatural isn't for another five years, cool your heels.

By hook or by crook, pretty much everyone ends up going camping so they have an excuse to check out the lights. All except for Michael, who has to stay home with his father. "We're out of milk," he complains, to which his father replies "Use beer!" To further make his daddy issues super-text, Michael starts thinking that not only is River Dog the fourth alien, but that he's their real father! His portrayal is still too nuanced for me. Could you spell it out a little more show? Maybe someone could say "gee, Michael has a lot of daddy issues. He's the one with the stupid hair!"

At the camping trip, Alex and Isabelle almost hook up, but then she tells him that they can only be friends. Which is a highly appropriate reaction to Colin Hanks, but now we have three couples who love each other but can't be together because one party is an alien. Highly creative, writing staff. Wouldn't it be more interesting if an alien went "I don't care, I'm just going to be with this person I like" and the others had to deal with it? See, then the characters and their dynamic would be different, so there would actually be a reason to have more than two characters.

Alien superpower of the week: Changing your hand in a card game so you can lose to your father. Well, sure hope no one had the same cards as Max's new hand.

Finally, the aliens manage to find a mini-crop circle which glows when they wave their hands over. Michael interprets it to mean that the fourth alien is coming. Well, that's convoluted. If this guy has spent fifty years on Earth, you think he would've figured out how to use a phone. Or if he doesn't know exactly who the aliens are, couldn't he just use River Dog to pass a message along? Making our heroes brave an entire police force just to find out that he's RSVPed seems pretty irresponsible for a member of an advanced alien race.

Then Valenti comes up to them and asks what they're doing, but Max manages to erase the crop circle before he can see it. Okay, how the hell did he not see it glowing? The scene established he was spying on them, it showed a crappy CGI effect, how could this not be incredibly obvious? Why not just have Michael touch the symbol and then have a psychic flash? That would be about a million times more plausible and it would explain how Michael knows what it means when thus far they've been unable to translate any of the other alien writing.

Afterward, Valenti visits his father in an old folks' home in a scene whose only purpose seems to be that William Sadler is way too good to be in this show.
