For a long time, people have wondered why fandom embraces certain media, despite that media being sexist, racist, or just plain badly-written. Why is it that certain shows, with awesome female characters, clever writing, and talented actors, seem to fall by the wayside? And why is it that shows that are vastly inferior... I mean shows that defy laws of dramatic storytelling you didn't even know existed... I mean shows that are just dag nasty bad... seem to gain these huge followings?

Well, I've figured it out. I've actually discovered the secret formula that governs fandom's acceptance or dismissal of a TV show. Ladies and gentlemen... fasten your seatbelts.

Your "oh snap"s and "zing!"s can go in the comment section, thank you.

This is why I'm having a hard time taking the outpouring of anger at the faily fanfic survey (which is in fact appallingly fail-ridden) seriously. A little self-reflection would be nice.

I knew this was going to win from the topmost layer. There's usually a strange, uncomfortable lull between two turfs of conversation, and usually that lull is covered with a variation on the following: 'Also lol they are hot. Yes.'

Pretty people + Gay subtext = mass fandom love? We really are that easy to please, aren't we? As a woman and a minority I hang my head in shame.

Although I did quit watching Heroes, which fits the formula, and the outright sick misogyny on Supernatural pretty much makes my stomach turn so I quit watching that. But just when I start feeling better about myself, I remember that I watched Smallville up until Failsday and then the shame washes over me.

I'm fairly certain the misogyny on SPN is supposed to be in-character. Dean, is, in fact, a dick.

Updated chart for 2009.
Is it Twillight?
Yes: embrace the fandom, DO IT!!!
No: complain in the lack of Twillight, then write a crossover fic.
The earth is doomed, at this point the end of days will be a nice relief... unless God or whomever is a Twihard...NOOO!!! ( fall on my butt in shock like William Shatner in Star Trek 3 after is son dies )

That "Is There Gay Subtext->No->Try Harder!" loop is the condensed version of a series of convoluted processes that would make a chart bigger than this one.
