Oh, boy

Watching Battlestar Galactica is kind of like putting your sick dog to sleep. You don't want it to end, but at the same time, you're happy the suffering is about to end.

To start off with, after TPTB finally got around to fixing the character derailment and, let's be honest, neglect that Boomer has gotten for most of the show's run, swinging back to "oh, she's working with Cavil and totally evil!" is like a slap in the face. It's plot over characters, yet again, which I think is what will really sink BSG in the eyes of history.

First, for some reason the rebel Cylons want to kill Boomer. Because she sided with Cavil. Given the forgiveness kick everyone has been on lately, this really comes out of left field. And the worst part was that the rebel Cylons' POV was never presented. It was all very Inspector Javert. No Six ever said "oh, Boomer gave Cavil information that killed six of my friends" or something like that. It was just naked artifice to move the plot along. And then, after last week where the Final Five were fine with telling all the other Cylons what to do, now they have to sit with their thumbs up their collective ass and listen to Kara rock out.

Perhaps it's unfair, but I do have to wonder, during the whole montage of Kara looking for habitable worlds, why they can't just go back to New Caprica or the Twelve Colonies or Kobol? Sure, Cavil could be blockading it, but given the reconciliation they've found with the rebel Cylons, it can't be that hard to negotiate with him. We've established it's sound in principle, at least.

In the B-plot, which is done alright, if unspectacularly, Kara is getting visions (what else!) of a ghostly piano player who is absolutely not her father, no way. For one thing, her father is Dirk Benedict, not Vancouver!Jeffrey Dean Morgan. But really, isn't it a bit late in the series to be introducing "She wants to fuck pops" into her characterization, or are we just trying to ensure that all hotshot sci-fi pilots have daddy issues? It just seemed like pointless shock value.

Speaking of pointless shock value, this rape scene where Helo comes onto Boomer (he's married to Athena, who Boomer is disguised as, and given the ease with which Helo mistakes the two, all the Eights onboard must be preparing a class-action sexual harassment lawsuit. Maybe someone should get a tattoo, wear their hair up, wear hipster glasses)... basically, it's Athena's evil twin sleeping with her man and if anyone had any doubts that BSG has devolved into pure soap opera, well, there you go. And not even that great soap opera. I mean, evil twin! Slept with her husband! Kidnapped her baby! To take back to her new, evil man! Who slept with mommy! And looks like mommy's daddy! The whole thing with Athena, bound and gagged, watching for TEH ANGST just wrapped around from being shocking to being narm. I mean, really, it's so silly, how can you take that seriously?

And since Boomer easily could've made an excuse to put Helo off, I guess she's now an unrepentant rapist and totally evil because... uhh... err... right, probably in a deleted scene. We have time for the shock value, but not time for, you know, subtlety. And really, you know this isn't going to get picked up on, so why couldn't we have skipped that and spent the time on something important?

Narm. I'm calling it. BSG has flirted with it, they've danced close to it, but this is the first time they've really embraced the narm. This damn show has jumped the shark so many times that poor Selachimorpha is getting dizzy. Just make up your mind whether to be good or bad! Whoever's retarded cousin that you've got editing the scripts, don't let him stay on just because the series is ending. How do you want the best show on TV to end?

Okay, before then Chief starts going to visit Boomer in the brig. Is it just me, or are you more likely to get action in the brig than you are at the bar? Tigh hooked up with Caprica, Tyrol re-hooks-up with Boomer... anyway, it's all very woobie-ish and touching and naturally the rest of the episode trods all over it so evil twin can sleep with good twin's husband and kidnap good twin's baby. DON'T MAKE ME SHOOT YOU! CROOOOOW!

So Chief, thinking with the little head instead of the square head, busts Boomer outta there. As a sidenote, all the other characters selling Boomer like she's this diabolical Hannibal Lecter mastermind is pretty hilarious. Adama's all "She put two holes in me," as everyone up to and including his CYLON BEST FRIEND hasn't figured out the sleeper agent programming thing, and Roslin's worried about Boomer poking herself with a toenail needle and blowing up like in that one episode of Voyager (here's a thought, DON'T LET HER GET VISITORS! ESPECIALLY FROM PEOPLE WHO'VE BEEN IN RELATIONSHIPS WITH HER! IDIOTS!), and, you know, it's Boomer! What kind of idiot would think Boomer is some kind of criminal mastermind... right, writers, natch.

So the plot creaks forward another notch and now I guess Hera is the key to finding Earth a home, so they have to get her back from Cavil, so I guess there'll at least be pretty shiny dogfights before we get a final confrontation like this.

(Can't you just picture Cavil saying "You have just enough time to say goodbye to your loved one! Only... you can't figure that one out, can you?" to Tigh? Or Kara? Or anyone?)

I just kept thinking of that episode of The Office where Michael can't tell the Asians apart, so he marks one with a marker. Helo should really just mark Athena every morning without her noticing. "Come here, honey." *mark* "What was that?" "I love you. Have a good day."
