Sep. 17th, 2013 01:56 amI guess what’s frustrating about Myka/HG being non-canon is that there doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Lemme ‘splain—in my usual nonsensical and potentially offensive manner—if Kate Beckett on Castle were a lesbian, that would get in the way of her relationship with Castle, which is the main couple endgame of the show. And if she were bisexual, it’d run the risk of coming off as a sweeps week lesbian thing since her main relationship is always going to be with Rick. Even if she left him for a woman, you’d know she would get back together with him and her female love interest would end up being The Baxter no matter how cute they were together.
In Warehouse 13, there’s nothing that Myka being bisexual would spoil. There’s no one she’d be ‘cheating on’. There’s no wonderful Breaking Bad endgame that would be ruined if Myka entered into a relationship with a woman, and if there is some grand plan that would be wrecked by Myka having any non-straight feelings whatsoever, how satisfying could it be after multiple seasons pointed in the opposite direction? Imagine if instead of consummating their relationship, Castle and Beckett ended up saying “nope, no sexual tension at all, we were just friends all along, honest”? Not very satisfying for the audience, especially when the actors kept talking about the romantic chemistry between their characters and the characters were given lots of “look how much they care about each other!” moments.
And yes, I’m sure as originally conceived by Jack Kenny, Myka Bering was straight as an arrow. So what? Characters change, are retconned, are spared the firing squad or bumped off early. Wesley Crusher was meant to make it to the series finale of The Next Generation; does that mean they shouldn’t have booted the character when he obviously wasn’t working? Spike from Buffy was meant to die in the second season; the writers saw the character’s popularity and let him live on and redeem himself. These kind of course-corrections happen all the time, because no showrunner can plan out his show AND the audience reaction for years in advance. In the end, how hard could it possibly be and what harm could it possibly do to the larger story for Myka and HG to kiss?
