So about that gay DC character...
May. 22nd, 2012 08:41 amI don't know, seems a little pointless to me. Let's say they turned, just for the sake of argument, Tim Drake gay. If you keep Superboy straight, what's the point? Shipping Tim Drake with Bunker? Man, even fangirls don't care about Bunker. I've checked. "Oh, a gay teen superhero? That's nice. So then Batman runs his hand over Superman's rippling muscles--"
For my money? Make Booster Gold and Blue Beetle gay. It's not like there's some popular het ship you'd be losing there--like, to go back to the previous example, Tim/Steph and Cassie/Kon--in fact, I can't recall a single big het ship in their histories. And pretty much the only people who care about Booster Gold and Blue Beetle are Boostle fans, so making them gay can only increase their appeal. You'd have people going "gay superheroes?" and checking it out, then seeing a pair of funny guys whose humor had nothing to do with their gayness, just their personality. You don't even have to change their dynamic any. Just have them cuddle more.
In fact, Ted Kord doesn't exist in the DCnU, so just make Booster gay, introduce Ted Kord, make that a thing. You don't even have to bring Ted back to life.
Okay, my brand dictates that I take a moment to talk about lesbians, even though DC has said the character will be male. So, if DC were to make more than one character gay (ha! As if gay people need more than one guy to represent them!), Starfire. She and Donna Troy were pretty much gay in New Teen Titans anyway, it would do a lot to redeem Starfire's characterization, you wouldn't have to worry about invalidating Dick/Kory since that ship has sailed. Just have Donna Troy be an Amazon Starfire meets on a trip to Paradise Island, give them a relationship slightly more high-brow then Kory immediately propositioning her for joyless sex. The Starfire fans will be happy to see Kory in an adult relationship, the Donna fans will be happy to see her existing, and hey, lesbians like alien space babe/warrior princess pairings as much as the next comic book fan. Win/win/win.
