So before the first half of season two Sophia plot goes into an internet maelstrom of backdraft-to-backdraft-to-backdraft... did anyone ever consider that the entire plot would've worked better with Carl as the lost child? I mean, name one thing about Sophia. You can't. She's just a little girl. All we know about her is that she can't follow simple directions, for instance, traveling along a river rather than wandering off to look for a gruesome zombie-related death. The only one who really cares about her as a person is Carol, and what we do know about her? Uhh, I think she had an abusive husband? Or something? And then he got eaten by a zombie or whatever.

This isn't exactly a hotbed of character dynamics we're talking. While with Carl lost, you have his parents as well as Shane all invested in recovering him. Since they're the fucking leads, it would've been nice for them to have some emotions about the kid besides "oh, well, a lost child."

By the way, can we please stop using Lori as a big red button for false drama and conflict? At this point, she'll pretty much always advocate the most counter-intuitive action under some vague notion that it'll help her kid. I love female characters and I keep waiting for Rick to yell "JESUS GOD, WOMAN, WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU EXPECT FROM ME?" Because let's look at her track record so far--

Shane, attempted rapist and amateur psycho, tells her he's going to pack up and go: "Please don't leave! My son!"

Hershel, the group's one doctor, has gone off to be drunk and alone in zombie world. Rick immediately decides to go out and bring him back so he can treat a stricken survivor: "Clearly, what my son needs more as he recovers from a gaping chest wound isn't a doctor, but having some quality time with his dad. My son!"

Dale, wise old man and non-psycho, tells her that attempted rapist Shane might've killed someone: "That's not possible! He's so good-natured! My son!"

I'm not someone who needs every female character to turn into Vasquez, but here's a good idea for writing her. Get the actor who plays Carl. Explain Lori's actions in the coming episode to him. If he says "That doesn't make sense according to my fifth-grade education," don't have her do that. It's seriously bordering on some 'hysterical female' stereotype now. I half-expect the next episode to be about a CRISIS when she sees a mouse and the menfolk have to shoo it off with a broom.
