seriousfic: (The motherfucking princess)
You post a comment on this entry.

In return, I will give you a list of seven actors. (I may look at your profile for a refresher on your fandoms, so consider this a perfect time to update your Interests section!)

Then YOU will go back to your LJ and do a quickie show bible. The show bible includes:

A one-paragraph blurb on what the show is about (like you get in TV Guide)
What character each actor is playing (you don't need character names, but you do need a description
For extra credit, a sketch of a plot arc or two OR a couple of two-sentence teasers for first-season episodes.

I'm sorry for the superhero movie-ness of this, but this cast kinda demanded it.

- Gina Torres
- Enrico Colantoni
- Bridget Regan
- Michael Hogan
- Christina Hendricks
- Freema Agyeman
- Seth Gabel

After an ace fighter pilot (Fringe's Seth Gabel) crash-lands on a mysterious island, he realizes he's unwittingly unleashed the ancient evil its inhabitants were guarding. In penance, he agrees to serve as "native guide" for the warrior women going to the outside world to hunt it down… one of whom will come to be known as the superhero Wonder Woman.

Bridget Regan – Princess Diana (natch). A skilled and courageous warrior, even at her young age, Diana's gods-given wisdom makes her the clear leader of the expedition, even as her naiveté and trusting nature lead to their own problems.

Lucy Lawless as Queen Hippolyta. The leader of the Amazons, Hippolyta occasionally offers guidance to Diana… and orders to her companions.

Gina Torres as Phillipus. The long-time companion and bodyguard of the queen, Phillipus now goes with her daughter as protection. A veteran warrior and survivor of Hercules' massacre, Phillipus is untrusting and blunt, always quicker to side with pragmatism than empathy. (Together, she and Io are the Spock and Bones to Diana's Kirk.)

Freema Agyeman as Io. A blacksmith and sometimes sorceress, Io acts both as Diana's weaponsmith and her conscience, balancing out Phillipus' blunt honesty. A sage with a head for weaponry and magic, Io is charmed by the technology of Man's World. ("Look, Diana, an iPod! It has 3.9 gigs for storing MP3s! I don't know what any of that is!")

(Yeah, I know Io is supposed to be a muscley redhead, but Agyeman would be perfect as an adorkable nerd with a heart of gold. Besides, I don't think anyone would object to another PoC in the cast.)

"Wait, so the white lady is gonna be telling the two sisters what to do?"

Oh, go run for President!

Christina Hendricks as Circe – Imprisoned for thousands of years in Tartarus and guarded by the Amazons, Circe is a witch who was close to becoming a goddess, and intimately involved in the Amazons' brutal subjugation at the hands of Hercules. Circe at first disguises herself as Diana's publicist, Myndi Mayer, before betraying the team at a crucial juncture and setting Diana on a quest for revenge.

At first I thought "redhead=Artemis," but (and I admit unfamiliarity with Hendricks' work as an actress) it seems to me that her appeal stems from a curvy sexuality, and Artemis, if anything, should be even more athletic and martial than Diana. So, she gets to be Circe.

Seth Gabel as Steve Trevor. An ace pilot, Steve's been a playboy since he started high school, and has done his best to make the phrase "a girl in every port" literal. He also happens to have no idea how a relationship would work, cheerfully admitting to a fear of commitment ("Well, not fear per se… it's like, eating spinach. I know a lot of people say it's good for me, but I'd rather just have a cheeseburger."). So when he falls head over heels for Diana, whose idea of relationships was formed by a warrior culture of peaceful and high-minded, let's face it, ladies, it gets awkward fast. Adorably so.

Not to have Diana pine over him or anything, but it might humanize her a little to have something she's not perfect and controlled about. Plus, adorableness.

Enrico Colantoni as Mark Sandsmark – Steve's old college professor, the group comes to him for information on Circe. Mark's studied archaeology his entire life and can be trusted to have just about any bit of folklore, mythology, or trivia on hand. (I know, I know, he's supposed to be Helena Sandsmark, but there wasn't a mature woman in my given cast and hey, just one attractive man in a cast of cute girls? What, am I making a harem anime?) He's also the father of…

Kaitlyn Dever as Cassandra Sandsmark – A young, impressionable girl who imprints on Diana as a sort of surrogate mother, Cassie quickly learns there's more to her heritage than meets the eye. Namely…

Lynda Carter as Athena, Goddess of Wisdom – Diana's patron goddess, Athena guided Cassie's creation in much the same way Diana was born from clay. It's all very complicated. We'll get to it in the second season.

Zoë Bell as Artemis – Second-in-command to the Bana-Mighdall, rogue amazons who pledge allegiance to Ares, Artemis is pure combat. While Diana has studied wisdom and art, Artemis has learned to kill without mercy. But her continued contact with the merciful and empathetic Diana slowly drives her to question her deeply-held beliefs about the future of the Amazons. While her mother, known only as Shim'Tar, will do whatever it takes to plunge the world into war with the Bana-Mighdall as the victors.

Yeah, so maybe I'm a pig, but I've always thought that while Diana is a very classical beauty, Artemis should be more handsome, with an angular face. A plus: we can just say she has a "Bana-Mighdall" accent.

Tabrett Bethell as Barbara Ann Minerva/the Cheetah – More shades of gray than an out-and-out villain, Minerva is a "tomb raider" who will do anything to rid herself of a curse she received as a result of her lust for power… including preying upon the Amazons. But she harbors little ill will toward Diana, and will assist her if the stakes are high enough.

Look at that, a Wonder Woman series where Tabrett Bethell isn't Artemis. What're the odds?

Michael Hogan as Ares, God of War – The traitor within the Greek Pantheon, Ares counts many followers around the world as his loyal subjects in an ancient conspiracy. Their aim: to drive the world into war. His actions led to Steve releasing Circe, now just one of many pawns he's bringing against the Amazons… the one group that can stop him. He moonlights as a prominent military industrialist, developing weapons which always seem to come out against Diana…

I had a version of this show which was cast entirely with people from old Raimi shows (Vaaro was Steve Trevor!), and this was Craig Parker. But hey, he can't show up in every series being slinky and evil.

(Fangirls: YES HE CAN.)

Some random episodes:

1x02 – First contact between Paradise Island and "Man's World" is jeopardized when a series of terrorist attacks appear to be the work of Amazon warriors. Diana tracks down the perpetrators and learns of a rift within the Amazons formed by her very birth.

1x03 – Diana's new publicist Myndi Mayer (special guest star Christina Hendricks) is helping rehabilitate the Amazons' image in the wake of misinformation and scandalous gossip, but she also takes a predatory interest in military liaison Steve Trevor. Cassie introduces Io to social networking.

1x06 – The first delegation of outsiders to arrive at Paradise Island are imprisoned after a prized Amazon artifact is stolen. As tensions with Man's World run high, Diana hunts down a cat-like supervillain to answer for the crime.

1x10 – After a team-up, Wonder Woman and Superman (special guest star Craig Horner) seem to be hitting things off. Steve struggles with feelings of jealousy by going drinking with Mark… a guys' night out that is quickly invaded by Io and Phillipus.

1x20 – Seeking more information on the bestial Genocide that is wrecking havoc on Paradise Island, Diana travels to a parallel universe where Themyscira has been destroyed. There, she finds the monster's source… her own counterpart, Donna Troy (special guest star Olivia Wilde).
