Since the "shame on you, Marvel" has been adequately covered elsewhere, I'd just like to take a moment to rethink some assumptions. Now, to be honest, I haven't read the story in question so it's possible Marvel's way has mine beat all hollow, but it occurs to me that if the goal is to A. Tell a thrilling/funny superhero story and B. Set up Peter and Michelle as an odd couple, there's a much simpler way to do it without any controversy at all.

We all know Chameleon is only disguising himself as Peter to do something sinister, so let's say he needs Michelle to do that. He asks her out on a date as some sort of cover for his assassination/what-have-you. Komedy ensues as everything the Chameleon does is to further his mission, but also makes him look like the perfect boyfriend. He asks Michelle to dance so he can get away from security interviewing guests, he orders a lobster dinner as a signal to his contact, and when Michelle asks him back for coffee, he makes an elaborate romantic excuse so he can go off and kill the Mayor (or whatever).

So now Peter is "involved" with Michelle and can't detach himself without confessing his secret identity, but the story of how they "got together" is something you'd let your kids read. Simple.
