Oct. 12th, 2008 07:45 amSo, according to Brand New Day continuity, neither Venom nor Norman Osborn knows Peter Parker's identity, correct?
Leaving aside that both of them learned who he was before Peter married MJ, the supposed point of divergence between normal continuity and BND continuity... and that Venom knowing Peter's identity is a biological function of the bond between host and symbiote, that him no longer knowing it is akin to Marty McFly altering history in 1985 and coming back to find humans no longer possess pinkies...
Leaving that aside, as I said...
This change was orchestrated by Mephisto, correct? The Devil. The being who has encouraged and/or provoked every act of perversion, malice, and evil throughout history, AM I RIGHT? The guy who, by definition, stood in the corner of Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Brett Ratner, and cheered them on.
Seeing as how supervillains NOT knowing Peter's identity would make his life THAT much easier, why is the Prince of Lies doing it? Not only that, but he's raised Harry Osborn from the dead, thus removing the major reason for Norman's grudge against Peter. This, coupled with the revelation that Norman killed Gwen as a result of Gwen's affair with him (and not to tweak Peter off), means I see no reason why Norman and Peter should persist in their feud. They should be tipping their hats to each other in passing. Iron Man and Captain America have canonically offended each other more! (Yes, I know, Norman put Flash in a hospital. He got better. Did Black Goliath?)
This is Writing 101. Actions must progress organically from the world the story is set in and from the characters that are presented. Characters can change, they can reveal hidden sides of themselves, but they can't go in opposition to themselves any more than a car can stop at a stop sign and then fly straight up. The Joker is a psychopathic mass murder - he won't start cuddling your Mary-Sue because she stubbed her toe. Spider-Man is a valiant hero - he won't rape hooker because she looks pretty. And the Devil, presented as incontrovertibly evil and irredeemable, cannot do good or on its own terms, the terms upon which even the most vulgar pornography succeeds, BND/OMD FAILS FOREVER.
A Sidenote: While I'm on the subject, why don't all these omniscient demonic supervillains ever think to share secret identities? In an old DC crossover, the devilish Neron walked straight from tempting Batman with Jason Todd's resurrection (to twitters of slightly creepy delight from Bruce/Jason shippers the world over) to meeting with hordes of supervillains to barter for their souls. Why not simply offer the true identity of Batman instead of UNLIMITED COSMIC POWER? Hell, why not just GIVE IT AWAY? If just one superhero bites it, well, mission accomplished. Clean sweep for Satan. Of course then everyone would have a public ID and we wouldn't have to wonder why no one realizes that Clark Kent is Superman with glasses on, but in-story?
We could always suppose that a benevolent force -- God, Dr. Strange, what have you -- is countering the demons, but it makes you wonder why they never perform any miracles to equal Hell's constant acts of war. Just once, couldn't the Heavenly Host step in to ensure a hero DOES receive a fateful phone call? The unopposed presence of demons take Candide to the illogical extreme: Not only isn't this the best of all possible worlds, but it's nigh-indistinguishable from the worst!
ETA: Can we, as a fandom, please stop qualifying the morality of Caprica Six killing a baby in the pilot of Battlestar Galactica? Leaving alone that she KILLED A BABY, I've heard the argument that she did it to spare the baby the horrors of the coming nuclear holocaust. Cue the moral ambiguity, shades of gray, blah blah blah Ron Moore doesn't like the Iraq War. What I think a lot of people are forgetting is that Six, as a Cylon, helped CAUSE the nuclear armageddon and that model in particular had done extensive work in bringing it about. Yay, go Caprica, sparing that baby from the horrors of the nuclear war that is 100% YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.
