This is sorta interesting.
Feb. 15th, 2008 10:07 amYou know the "comics pros hate OMD" meme that's been floating around? Well, now it's done with webcomics. There's only one webcomic author that spots OMD (in weirdly glowing terms, at that), and he makes the common mistake of saying that BND will bring in new readers and that old readers are being selfish for wanting to be valued as highly as mythical new readers.
OMD was the equivalent of a movie ending with "it was all a dream" (except that Gwen and Norman still had some bouncing baby goblins). How well has that ever gone over with audiences? So what's to stop Dan Slott's next five years of continuity from getting crapped down the drain as well? Or for any possible new readers to be driven off by the bad word of mouth and buy... anything else? Happened in the Clone Saga. Happened when Mary-Jane died.
Here's a good reason to buy BND: In five months' time, it'll be exactly the same. J. Jonah Jameson will still be alive, Peter will still be single, Aunt May still won't know Peter is Spider-Man, and Mary-Jane will only show up to tease the Peter/MJ shippers as a desperate sop for money. Because far more than the character of Spider-Man or the spirit of the Lee/Dikto years or anything else about the mythos, the current Spider-Man TPTB love the status quo of Spider-Man. They've got everything nicely set up in Mylar and they won't want anything to mess with it.
