Well, okay, not totally the same because there actually is some canon, Jack Kirby canon even, on how they first met (there was snark, I have scans). But it's the kind of thing I can assume was retconned in New Earth continuity for lots of "and then they dun sex" fic. It's fun! Because going by the original Kirby, you see Scott Free presumably coming to Earth in the first issue, then a few issues later Barda shows up. So that puts it at a few weeks, maybe months, after Scott leaves Apokolips for Barda to follow him.
So of course, John Byrne wrote a story where Scott played Highlander for a couple centures while Barda twiddled her thumbs on Apokolips, then came after him. I don't really have a point there, but I think it's usually safest to ignore John Byrne.
