I think one of the refreshing things about Brave is that Word of God has stated Merida isn't a tomboy but a girl who just feels she's too young to get married. She's athletic but she likes wearing dresses. I like tomboys as much as the next person but I do tire of the whole trope that is common in fantasy, the "I will empower women by making a girl reject all things considered womanly" trope.
There actually is a ship in that movie and it's Fergus and Elinor and they're really great, with Elinor being my total favorite. It seems obvious to me that Elinor just wants Merida to be a strong queen and their relationship was one of the best ways I've seen written of moms and daughters. Neither are wholly in the right yet Elinor isn't an oppressive monster, Merida isn't a recalcitrant brat. They're both phenomenal in all their good points and flaws.
