Today, on the feminist website I contribute to (I can't wait to use that in an internet argument. "Uh, yeah, Catwoman is a giant slut, and if I were a sexist, would I be a contributer on a feminist website?"), I review Colombiana, the Professional-sequel-turned-Zoe-Saldana-actioner. It's the first revenge movie where the hero puts off actually taking revenge for the entire film. Finally, an action movie for procrastinators!

Thaaaaank you for that review. Every time that commercial comes on, I know that I should WANT to see it with a fiery passion. I should be camped out right now. But something about it pisses me off. Zoe Saldana wasted in a shitty role/plot? Maybe. The fact that Michael Vartan has one facial expression ("Look at me, I'm CARING AT YOU!")? Probably. I just got irritated every time I saw the ad and didn't know why. Now I know why. :D

And she really was amazing in The Losers. :D

Zoe Saldana kicking ass? You gotta admit, there has to be some incredible writing for someone to make that come off so lackluster.

Damn, I wanted this to be a good woman-taking-back-(night/life/family/freedom/sexuality) movie. I feel like no matter how much training and writing goes into these movies, it always feels like they cast a man and then settled for a hot chick.

I know women in Hollywood aren't supposed to get butch unless they're playing an Oscar-bait serial killer, but maybe Zoe Saldana could have demonstrated how she can run and fight despite her heavy uterus and deep feelings about accessories?

And I don't want to turn this into some kind of angry feminist thing where the sexualized, aggro-lite lady on the poster gets all the blame, but this seems like it was all on purpose. I get that ZS is an actress and wants to be working. I also think as a lead actress, she could probably have said, "Hey, maybe I could climb the fire escape in pants instead of this thong and whip cream - but wardrobe did a great job! Just feels more realistic to be not advertising my waxer at this particular moment." How short does a skirt have to get before it qualifies as violating (your nudity clause)?
