seriousficBasically, imagine Transformers without all the "komedy" bits of Shia LeBeouf making jokes about masturbating or his mom getting high, replaced with more Marine stuff and Michelle Rodriguez playing herself.
I'm not sure quite why this is getting such abhorrent reviews. It's not the best-written or least cliched movie ever written, but it does what it sets out to do just fine (although I admit that I'd be more interested if they went in more of a "Generation Kill vs. aliens" instead of "John Wayne war movie vs. aliens"). The tinhat part of me thinks there's a bit of venom brewing at the fact that it's blatantly pro-military, even though it doesn't go near the Iraq conflict. Like, Ebert's review actually insulted people who would go see it, which is rancor he usually reserves for slasher movies and diet plans. I'm kinda thinking there's a bit of dirty hippie in that thinking.
