Damages Season 1
Nov. 29th, 2010 11:27 amI'd recommend it. Over the course of every episode, it sets everything up, wraps everything up, and still leaves room for an intriguing plot in the second season. All in all, a very uncliched take on your standard Wall Street "my mentor isn't all they're cracked up to be!" plot. Two quibbles.
1. The gay dude in hopeless love with a straight dude? Really? As grateful as I am not to have to see Ċ½eljko Ivanek in any sort of intimate situation (as I'm pretty sure foreplay for him is trying to kill Jack Bauer), he's characterized as this brilliant guy who can give Patty Hewes a run for her money, and yet he screws himself over repeatedly for someone who isn't even the same orientation as him? Hey, I liked Fastlane too, but maybe instead he could find a better way to meet guys than getting them involved in multimillion dollar criminal schemes.
2. The character of Leila, who is pretty much entirely a red herring. Her only purpose in the narrative is to make us think she might be responsible for David's death (although we, as an audience, know how dramatically unsatisfying it would be for a random psycho slasher to have that much impact on the plot... AHEM, Damages season two...) and, if you're generous, to show how great a guy David is in not having no-strings-attached sex with her. Because it's such a hardship to only have sex with Rose Bryne, lemme tell you.
What is with all these movies and TV shows with funny, attractive, charismatic girls who turn out to be psycho stalkers? If they just met a guy who wasn't in a relationship and got some therapy, they'd have a great social life. Is the dating scene really that bad that they actually think to themselves "no way I'm watching anymore white guys dance! Die, bunny, die!" Like there's this upcoming movie The Roommate where Leighton Meester is a psycho who tries to steal her roommate's boyfriend or something? How does Leighton Meester need to steal anyone's boyfriend? She's Blair Waldorf! Hello!
