seriousficSo since everyone is giving their take on manpain, one of those annoying terms that fell into widespread usage before anyone defined it, I thought I would, since I don't think anyone else has added barely relevant pictures with captions in italics. There are two rather short explanations, keeping in mind that manpain dovetails nicely with AAAAAAANGST. The big difference is that, as you might imagine with a word that feminists have added 'man' to as a prefix, manpain is a bad thing (*dodges burning bra*).
Angst is pain a character goes through that tends to make you want to hug them, make them hot cocoa, tell them everything will be alright, write fic in which he either gets a puppy or is a puppy, and want to have sex with them (hey, no judging here). E.g. I watched the last episode of Being Human and OMG, Annie!
And I kinda wanted to have sex with her!
Manpain is an attempt at angst gone horribly wrong. It is pain a character goes through that makes you want to make them hot cocoa and throw it in their face, generally because the pain is brought about by their own assholishness/idiocy, is treated as THE WORST THING EVER!, or is simply harped upon past the point anyone who isn't totally pathetic should've gotten over it. E.g. When Batman left flowers at Stephanie Brown's memorial, I wanted to slap the Bat-taste out of his Bat-mouth. Oh, now you give a shit about her?
The difference between manpain and angst can be pretty subjective. Put less charitably, angst is pain that fandom likes and manpain is pain they don't like. For instance...
1. OMG, when I found out about Snape and Lily, I just wanted to hug him! Without any pants on!
2. Jesus Christ, when I found out about Snape and Lily, I wanted to cast a bitch-slap hex on his mouth. Yeah, great way to honor your lost love's memory, trying to make her only son's life a living hell.
Put even more simply, Ceelo's hit single Fuck You. The first verses are angst. The last verses are manpain. The difference? That's in the eye of the beholder.
