Book review: Summer of Two Wishes
Jun. 8th, 2010 05:49 pmBasic premise: Ever seen the movie Brothers? Like that, only shittier. Bizarrely, the story starts in media res with the heroine being told that her old husband wasn't killed in action, but was a POW for the last three years (in which she, of course, married someone). No establishing character or backstory, just boom, straight to the action. Well, you know, "action." And New Husband isn't introduced for, like, forty pages, so no points for guessing who the chick ends up with. I've bored you enough, here are the salient quotes.
His indignation suddenly angered her. "You act as if I should have assumed you were alive in spite of all the evidence to the contrary! I am sorry if I can't describe the loss and the despair I felt to your satisfaction, Finn, but believe me, there were days I never got out of bed. I spent many, many long nights surfing the Web, putting your picture up at every fallen soldier Web site I could find along with a personal tribute because that was the only thing I knew to do to soothe my grief, and that didn't even touch it."
She mourned on the internets, goddamn you! She also put up a tribute to you on Youtube. It was set to Enya music, you bastard!
Wyatt's obsession made him angry, furious, blind with rage. In one of his angrier moments, he wrote Macy a letter and told her he would seek full custody of the baby. He heard nothing back--not that he'd really expected to--but he'd at least put her on notice that she couldn't destroy his life. She couldn't take everything. She could take his heart and smash it to worm food, but she couldn't take his dog or his baby.
There's a man with his priorities in order.
The feel of a dog's tongue licking his hand woke Wyatt. It took him a moment to remember where he was. Oh, yeah--he'd broken into a Boy Scout camp.
Inappropriate topics for a Rule 63: Lolita. World War 2. Any project featuring Zac Efron, UNLESS YOU WANT TO KNOW THE HORRIFYING TRUTH!
