seriousficWell, I’ve had The Other Wife (just thought up the name. Catchy, non?) on my hard drive for a while and I decided it was about time I posted it instead of foisting it off on unsuspecting betas. It’s a couple different things to me, slightly experimental, somewhat subversive (and going by those last two clauses, a little pretentious. I’m an English major, I’m okay with that). Generally, fandom will greet news of any love polygon with the suggestion that a couple should “share” or have an orgy or you get the idea. There’s also a number of OT3 fics/PWP fics that condemn their participants to a blandly happy ending of more sex and fluffiness. As enlightened as it may be to show how a group of sex-positive, un-jealous, and generally genial people would take sex games in stride, the potential for drama is just too great to ignore.
It all makes me curious. What would bring such an arrangement about and how long would it last? How would anOT3 menage a trois work in a relationship where two out of three participants are demonstrably monogamous? Where one of them is either in denial about her bisexual or simply male-oriented? When someone wants to add a new party to the arrangement? How does having an innocent little threesome affect the relationship of the existing couple?
Plus, there’s the more specific character notes. How would the issues that’ve dogged Dick and Barbara festered if they had gotten married during the OYL time leap? How would Kory deal with Dick being married, how would all of them deal with her being pregnant, how would their friends cope, and so on and so forth. For time and readability not all of the possible repercussion are explored (you’d get to the point where reading four thousand words of Batman’s feelings about Dick’s nuptials would drag the story down), but the central thread of the Dick-Kory-Barbara triangle is something that’s never really been tackled in either canon or fanfic, to my admittedly limited knowledge. In Dick/Babs fic, Kory is out of the picture, and vice versa. The Other Wife is basically an attempt to redress that and other questions, with some sex, fluff, comedy, bodice-ripping, and (strictly verbal, sorry) catfighting.
Okay, maybe a lot pretentious. Just ignore me and enjoy the sexytime and torrid love affairytime.
My other project is the WonderBoy series, which is the old form of fanfic fix-it note with a touch of “damnit, I wanted to know what stories Greg Rucka might’ve told were it not for IC… and if he’d been a lesbian pornographer.” Yes, I’m going to try to salvage Amazons Attack. Wanky? A little, perhaps, although I can’t imagine there are many people who would rather have Wondy meekly apologize for killing Max Lord Loren Jupiter instead of saying “Well, gee, Batman, I don’t see Max Loren killing any sidekicks, commissioner’s wives, or librarians, do you?”
Except perhaps a little nicer than that. And a tad remorsefully.
