Heartbeat Sensor

So I was watching TV and I saw a commercial for a car with a heartbeat sensor. Apparently this is a little diode attached to your car remote that beeps when the car starts up and it detects a heartbeat... presumably just in case there's a guy hiding in your car, ready to rape you despite the gas station attendant's warning. Ooga booga!

Is this really a problem? I mean, if you're that worried, buy a flashlight. It's not only more useful, but it can also double as a club if called upon.

Really, now, this whole thing is just capitalizing on paranoia and fear. And so, under the guise of preventing the predation of women, this "heartbeat sensor" is preying on women...'s wallets. Not impressed, car manufacturers. Not impressed.

Actually, I think it's more about "dark parking lot, guy is hiding on the other side of your car to club you over the head and abduct you as you're putting your bags in" sort of worry thing.

Uhg. I really wish that for every product like this, or every "send this to all the women in your life!" forwarded e-mail warning us about men in backseats and dark streets, there was an e-mail or a mandatory class that told men how and why not to rape, assault or harass women.

It's ridiculous and tiring that the onus should always be on women to protect themselves, rather than on men to learn how to control themselves and find better ways to express their anger and/or sexuality.
