Summary: Michael was in no mood for Mahone’s weird attempts at bonding.
Sara was Michael’s new favorite pastime. He could look at her forever, even when it hurt to see the way she held herself. Like him.
“She’s been in pain,” came Mahone’s rasping voice, intruding on Michael’s musing.
“We all have.”
“Not like her,” Mahone corrected. “She carries it with her. You can see it, it’s in the shoulders. I’ve seen it a million times. Rape victims, intimidated witnesses… my wife.” His voice went distant, like he was talking to a far more constant companion than Michael. “She didn’t talk. They worked on her for hours and she didn’t talk.”
“Are you going somewhere with this?” Michael was in no mood for the other man’s weird attempts at bonding.
“The pain goes away. In time. She’s strong. If she wasn’t, she wouldn’t have made it. She’ll beat this.”
Michael turned to say of course she would beat it, she was Sara, but Mahone was already leaving. Michael went back to watching Sara, and her shoulders.
