The Dresden Files: Disc 3
Aug. 26th, 2008 11:06 pmIt's official: Claudia Black makes EVERYTHING better. Even when her character is... kinda badly-written. I think this is officially the part in the timeline where everyone on the production staff realized "Hey, we're on SCI-FI CHANNEL. We're sharing airtime with ECW." and stopped caring. So Harry is able to use modern electronics and keeps up the "no such thing as magic" charade even with someone who's seen him using magic.
Which is only the sort of thing an obsessive nerd would notice, but when you're on Sci-Fi Channel, your target audience is pretty much the obsessive nerd, so the least you could do is play along.
But then, a paycheck for Claudia Black is never a bad thing...
ETA: Disc 2 provides some pretty ample fodder for TV Tropes. Try to figure out where I start kidding. Three teenagers have been robbing stores with addictive black magic. Two of them are white and upper-class, while the third is black. The black teenager is doing it to pay for his sick mom's treatment (all together now... D'AWWWW!). Whitey is doing it because their parents didn't love them. The white kids die and the black guy survives, with an intrusive voiceover from Harry explaining that the survivor deserved to live and not be punished because he was only doing it to help his mom. Thanks for spelling that out there, Anvil Boy. I'm stupified that a theme that generic could make it to the screen without the slightest bit of creativity impeding it.
Apparently becoming an addict, even if it's because your parents abandoned you, is your own damn fault. But if you murder and rob to help your sick mother, it's all okay. (Never explained is why the poor teenager didn't just ask some of his rich friends for some money.)
