Fic: I Need A Hero (Superman Returns)
Title: I Need A Hero
Fandom: Superman Returns
Rating: PG
Characters/Pairings: Richard/Lois
Word Count: 231
Summary: There are aspects of their relationship that Richard and Lois don’t talk about.
When the books on stargazing arrived in the mail, Lois claimed it had always been a hobby of hers. She was hugely pregnant by then, so Richard didn’t question it. Instead he layered it into conversations with the other staff until Jimmy spilled the beans.
“Miss Lane an astronomer? I wouldn’t have thought she’d settle for anything less than astronaut.”
Oh, yes, it’s about Him. He was just one of those things they didn’t talk about, like how she had gotten pregnant when they’d always used protection. As her due date approached, she spent more and more time at the observatory or the telescope on the balcony or just staring out the bedroom window at the night sky.
But after she gave birth, the baby took up more of her time. They named him Jason, a perfectly normal name. By night she was either caring for him or too exhausted to really believe a man could fly. Richard felt a private, almost shameful glee at this. There was a primeval lack of equilibrium, of sportsmanship, of right.
Lois hadn’t chosen him, he hadn’t won her, but he could ignore that because he still had her and He didn’t.
So he could be content that Lois had never chosen, because even if it meant that she hadn’t chosen him, it also meant she hadn’t chosen Him… and that made all the difference.

This is what always gets me about Richard. I truly love him as much as Clark and want the best for him... sigh.

“Miss Lane an astronomer? I wouldn’t have thought she’d settle for anything less than astronaut.”
And the things that Richard and Lois don't talk about ... and this ...
even if it meant that she hadn’t chosen him, it also meant she hadn’t chosen Him… and that made all the difference.
That sums up their relationship so perfectly. Poor Richard, the default choice, but he loves her so much he stays anyway.
Wonderfully done!
