In defense of Avatar, the reason the blue catfolk were refusing the RDA's gifts was a combination of a)they didn't trust them, and b)they didn't need them. Also, the RDA probably planned to give them enough of their cool stuff for them to become dependent on it, then start jacking up the late fees after the first year is up, so to speak. (Look, historical parallels!) They have no problem making use of the throat radios, but then again, that was after Jake showed up on the Jesus dragon.
Incidentally, Tintin has been in the works for so long that a classic Indy movie actually used parts of a set originally made for it, IIRC. Last Crusade, maybe.
