The original movie can be explained by the fact that Kevin Flynn was clearly big into drugs.
Kevin: Alan! Lora! I just had the most incredible adventure inside the computer!
Alan: Yeah... we got the files proving Dillinger stole your ideas.
Kevin: Yes, that was me! I went onto the Grid and fought alongside Tron, helping him defeat the Master Control Program and his evil henchmen, Sark!
Lora: This is why I left you for Commander Sheridan.
