Punish People For Breaking The Rules By Breaking The Rules

So apparently we can go from

Scans_Daily: No warnings

No_Scans: One warning (for making a joke about what to call a Captain America/Red Skull ship)

To…

Scans_Daily: Banned

No_Scans: Banned

For…

Scans_Daily: Using the term 'mind-rape' to refer to… mind-rape. (Note: The mod, [livejournal.com profile] schmevil, was actually just looking for an excuse to ban me. I know this because she… said she was looking for an excuse to ban me. Like, directly to me. You can go over to Scans_Daily and read it for yourself right now. No, I have no idea what the "sexualized metaphor for female characters" is referring to. First time I've heard about it is when I'm getting banned for it. Good mod)

(Alternate punchline: I LEARNED IT FROM WATCHING YOU, ALRIGHT? I LEARNED IT FROM WATCHING YOU!)

No_Scans: Nothing.

Yes, that's right. I was on first strike and the mods decided to just go ahead and ban me, disregarding their own rules. Which is satisfying, in its own way. I wanted them to just 'fess up and admit they had banned me for no reason, so banning me for no reason fits the bill in a Megaforce "deeds not words" sort of way. Although I don't think the PM with two solid paragraphs of… shall we say "unladylike language"?... was necessary. A simple "The ban stands" would do, but hey, how many chances do you get to just cuss someone out in polite society? Not many. So I hope that was cathartic for [livejournal.com profile] aliasjack. Of course, she didn't manage to answer one of the six questions I'd asked (ranging from "When exactly did I get all these supposed warnings?" to "What is the non-triggery nomenclature for referring to mind-rape which you're inventing just now anyway?"), so I guess she cared enough to write an essay about my lacking ancestry and surplus of personality defects, but not enough to come down on whether or not "Dr. Rape" is an acceptable nickname for Dr. Light.

Of course, maybe you can get two separate warnings for asking about warnings, which I think is the point where you are officially a Franz Kafka character. No, no one's turning into a cockroach, he wrote other stuff.

But hey. At least I'm in good company. Take a look at what Gail Simone had to said about these folks.

To put the “wave of complaints” in perspective, I got maybe two emails of complaint, compared to hundreds that loved it, with one of the highest percentages of female respondents ever. To put THAT in perspective, I get more letters of complaint on average over Huntress’ belly being exposed (which I hate, too, and we’re getting changed back), per DAY. And unsurprisingly, almost all of the public complaining came from a small clique (mods and their close friends) from one website. The same website that goes crazy with joy if I show Catman naked. Take a step back, guys. This is a little silly.

Rejected by your patron saint. Don't know if ol' Kafka ever wrote about that. Seems like his territory, though.

And if it's not too late to play the sexism card, using the whole "triggering/safe space" thing as a bully pulpit from which you can punish people you don't like? Super classy. Maybe I act like an asshole sometimes, but at least I never say I'm doing it on behalf of rape victims.

In case you were ever wondering why some women don't call themselves feminists, meet the reason.

>"sexualized metaphor for female characters"

When people talk about how mankind has "raped the Earth", I doubt they mean that someone has literally gone down and given the dirt a good Rogering. Similarly...

The entry you're citing is protected and only members of scnadaily can view it.

Did anyone ever give you a non rape description of mind rape? :)

Nope. I suppose it would be easier if one existed. ;)

Not that Simone's post isn't without problems itself.

>Getting a lecture about the male gaze from some guy who wants to tell a creative team comprised almost completely of women what is acceptable as sexy and what isn’t is so fantastically tin-eared in the irony department that it actually made me laugh out loud.

Wait, so men aren't allowed to identify and attempt to avert issues relating to the male gaze? They're just supposed to let women tell them where it is? Maybe I'm reading this wrong.

You know, if you only had one strike I'm surprised they'd actually lie and say you got your third rather than just banning.

Indeed, you just can't have it both ways guys. You either accept that women and men can be over sexualized in certain circumstances or neither of them can.

Why was she looking for a excuse to ban you anyway? I mean come on, what community can't benefit from a little of your dry and biting sarcasm?

P.S You got a warning for the Cap/Skull thing? That was hilarious and in no way offensive.

[identity profile] escapay.livejournal.com 2010-11-02 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Also, mind rape doesn't just refer to women, men can be raped to!

[identity profile] seriousfic.livejournal.com 2010-11-02 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Why was she looking for a excuse to ban you anyway?

This is true: She thinks that if someone were to use shapeshifting to make themselves more attractive and get laid, that it would be rape. I pointed out that if that's the case, She-Hulk is a rapist, since turning into Shulkie and having sex with people who otherwise wouldn't go out with her is kind of her M.O.

I can't think of what else it could be, because I didn't hear one syllable, much less one word, about my apparent hatred of fangirls and love of sexualized metaphors before that.

I feel that it's important to say that your Purple Man post and pretty much all of your comments therein, creeped me (a chap, for reference) out.

They take this shit way too seriously. I love my comic book storylines and character development just as much as the next guy, but having lurked around scans_daily since it's lj days, I've noticed a definite gap between the 'clique' Gail refers to and most other general posters. Gotta hate it when mods power trip like that. Well it's their loss, I personally think your perspective on storylines and characters is of value (also brings the lols), whereas theirs is...lacking and generally the same discussion over and over and over again.

This must be one of those derailings I've heard so much about.

If the person in questions were hypocritical and the kind that thinks he understands issue but really doesn't and is trying to educate people who do indeed know better, then yes I can see how Gail maybe taking a laugh at him.

However, I agree on the notion that a man is inherently wrong on matters of gender and feminism is an extremely flawed view and I think underlankers described it best and I paraphrase;

'so if Palin thinks that Lois should be a barefoot woman who has to work in the kitchen then we should automatically prefer her version over John Byrne's independent, can-fight-for-herself, tough-as-nails reporter?

No chance of you using this as a learning experience, then?

[identity profile] seriousfic.livejournal.com 2010-11-04 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
As illuminating as "don't be creepy" is as a lesson, I think it'd be easier to just not deal with psychotic, judgmental hypocrites in the future.

Oh, I did learn it's really annoying to get banned for nothing more than pissing someone off. Here, let me show you.

I don't get it. What Hill did to Peter Parker WAS mind-rape. She had a telepath forcibly extract private, intimate information from Peters mind. I don't see how pointing that out glorifies rape or objectifies women.

[identity profile] seriousfic.livejournal.com 2010-11-07 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently, triggering works like saying the secret word on Peewee's Playhouse.

[identity profile] rdfox.livejournal.com 2010-11-11 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Except, of course, when it's in the form "Dr. McRapeypants" in reference to Arthur Light.
